Short Film Review: Daddy's HomePosted by: GoonWhile I was online today hitting up my usual haunts for obscure news and whatnot I was asked to write a review for this short film. I figured why not and than I discovered that it was by Broken helmer Alex Ferrari. I have heard nothing but good things about the film and look forward to watching it one of these days when I got the cash to cough up for a copy.
So needless to say I was pretty stoked to review something he had worked on even though it is only about a minute or two long. The short opens up with a bang and it really rattled me to my core. The perspective of the film is taken from a little girl as her abusive father returns home from work. He then proceeds to do what abusive husbands do and then the screen fades to black. As soon as you realise what just happened you are given several facts about spousal abuse and I learned several things that I never knew.
This reminded me a lot of the "This is your brain on drugs" commercial. If this could ever be aired on TV I can see it being very effective and might open up dialogue for women in a bad situation. But I think the most powerful point of the commercial was the directors choice to shoot from the childs perspective. I would like to believe that seeing this might even wake up some of those scum bags out there who commit these crimes every day. It's a very powerful message and one that is portrayed in this short VERY effectively.
