Mel Gibson to Return to Lethal Weapon?Posted by: ShawnIn a move that is obviously related to Mr. Gibson's drunken public outburts as of late, he is hinting at the possibility that he wants to star in another edition of the Lethal Weapon series. If that is the case Lethal Weapon 5 might soon be on the horizon, but there is simply no guarantee. First of all this might just be some sort of publicity stunt to get back Mr. Gibson's good name. He gives us what the fans want, and we forgive his sins...at least in a perfect world that would be how it would work.
It still seems difficult to imagine a 5th Lethal Weapon, givin the stubborness that Mel had shown in the past about doing it, and that Danny Glover still potentially refuses to participate in. Mel has already been offered $30 million, though that number might have dropped since then. It's hard to tell what effect his recent reputation is going to have on his career. Personally I'm hoping not much.
I've always been a Mel Gibson fan. I think there have been celebrities who have done far worse when under the influence of alcohol and many of them have walked away unscathed. But as Mr. Gibson is discovering there are just some things that strike a nerve with some people and a chain reaction goes off from there. I agree with the personal statement from Jodie Foster. His battle is with alcoholism, not prejudice. He has already made several public apologies and checked himself into a rehab station; there is only so much that he can do. I don't think that starring in a 5th Lethal Weapon is going to help people forget, and his decision to do so this early in the game only demonstrates how desperate he is to get his reputation back. What he needs to do is stay in Rehab for a good amount of time, and when he returns he can apologize again and again. He can provide community service, he can attend charities, and he can just show us he is an overall good guy with a few personal demons.
Don't worry Mel. I at least forgive you.
