Box Office Report August 6th, 2006Posted by: ShawnAlthough he has had his fair share of duds, Will Ferrell has been in so many movies lately that he's bound to get a few right. This week was the opening of his new film "Talladega Nights" about an idiotic racecar driver which is actually getting some decent reviews from all over. The film opened up at #1 this weekend bringing in a good chunk of revenue from box office patrons. My biggest personal shock this weekend is Nickelodeon's CG contribution "Barnyard" opening at #2. Normally animated films of lower-end quality (and don't get me wrong. The comedic aspect seems entertaining, but it's not the most well animated thing we've seen in a long time) do far worse in theaters. "Pirates of the Caribbean 2" is still drawing in crowds, and I'll bet a lot of them are repeat business. I've seen the film twice myself already, and I might end up seeing it a third time before it's run is up. The American release of "The Descent" which was a big hit across seas does a fairly decent opening for a horror. I was hoping it might have sparked more interest here, but hopefully word of mouth will start spreading on that one and next week it will see more action.
Nick Cage's new film "World Trade Center" opens next wednesday and so far the reviews are positive. I'm not ready to see a film based on such tragedy, but "United 93" had a good run so maybe there are enough people who are ready. Next Friday is also the Tim Allen superhero film "Zoom", the WiFi Zombie/ghost horror "Pulse", Justin Long's film about an imaginary college "Accepted", and Disney's newest dance film "Step Up". Summer is ending and these are pretty much the runts. "Zoom" might be pretty entertaining for the family crowd and I'm Though I don't think they really need to besure there have been some horror buff's looking forward to "Pulse" (). "Talladega Nights" and "Pirates" should not be underestimated next weekend. Just because there isn't anything new out worth seeing doesn't mean people won't go back to see the really good films all over again.
Til next time.
