Frank Miller Will Bring The Spirit To LifePosted by: JerricaIn 1940, not long after "Batman" made his debut on the comics scene, there came "The Spirit." Created by Will Eisner, "The Spirit" was actually a detective named Denny Colt who was believed to have been killed but survived in a state of suspended animation as a result of an experiment by one of his enemies, Dr. Cobra, and this allowed him to seemingly return from the dead. Fighting crime in Central City with Commissioner Dolan acting as his friend and ally, The Spirit was a working-class hero without the extraordinary advantages that other comic book heroes like Batman/Bruce Wayne or Superman possessed. And, he looked, walked, and talked noir. So, who better to bring "The Spirit" to the big screen than the legendary Frank Miller. Having brought his own dark, riveting, and razor-sharp touch to "Daredevil" and "Batman" to become one of the most popular and revolutionary artists and writers in the comics business, Miller is the perfect choice to adapt and direct "The Spirit." Miller's own "Sin City" was adapted and directed by him and Robert Rodriguez. Of "El Mariachi" and "Desperado" fame, Rodriguez insisted Miller be given credit for his work on the film, despite some controversy over that decision from the Director's Guild of America, and consequently, Rodriquez left the Guild. Reports are that Miller will officially announce his part in the project at Comic-Con in San Diego this Saturday.
The Hollywood Reporter quoted Michael Uslan of Batfilms who will be producing the film; "What makes Frank's involvement with 'The Spirit' particularly poignant was his special relationship with Will Eisner, captured last year in the book 'Eisner-Miller,' You have two of the medium's greatest storytellers of sequential art and cinematic comics discussing the compelling and controversial art form." And, Uslan couldn't be more right. Miller is ideal for this project, and with more than six decades of diverse noir material that is right up his crime alley, "The Spirit" is sure to quickly become one of the most anticipated comic book films currently in the works.
