Weekend BoxOffice Report July 17thPosted by: ShawnTry as they might the newcomers this week had practically no chance in hell to upstage the record breaking "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest". After grossing over $250 million in one week, Pirates has already surpassed it's production budget of $225 Mil. Someone get a video camera, I'm sure the disney execs are riverdancing around their offices right about now. Newcomers "Little Man" and "You, Me, and Dupree" take the second and third spots without coming close to the "Pirates" gross. I'm a little dissapointed that the Wayans brother's "Little Man", based on a Looney Tunes plot device of all things, just barely beat "You, Me and Dupree" this week. Apparently Owen Wilson needs to stop his ventures away from Buddy-films. Or at least not when he's put into direct competition with a bunch of Pirates. "Superman Returns" continues to keep movie-goers interested, as does Disney/Pixar's "Cars" which is in it's 6th week of release.
The weekend of July 21st is going to be an exciting week. From Kevin Smith to M. Night Shyamalan your choices in movies are bound to give you something you've been waiting for for some time. Now that "Pirates" has had a few weeks to run it's course, the studios are more confident about releasing what remains of their Summer movies. Obviously the big one for the upcoming week will be "Clerks 2", the long delayed follow-up to the indie smash-hit he made with his friends for $27,575. Also next week is the animated film "Monster House", the horror/fantasy "Lady in the Water" by M. Night Shyamalan, and "My Super-Ex Girlfriend". While "Clerks 2" has the fan base as an edge, I have a feeling all 4 films will be making next week's top 10.
Til next time.
