Box-Office Report July 9th 2006

It's a new record! "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" officially becomes the highest grossing movie in it's opening weekend (The spot had been held by "Spider-Man" for the last several years after it grossed about $115 million on the weekend of May 3rd, 2002). With over $132 million in three days that makes up more than half of the $225 million the film cost to make in the first place. Disney truely did dig up a treasure trove with this one (The first Pirates film only made $47 million by the way).  Of course this means not so much love for Superman who drops a good 58% in revenue in only his second weekend.

Next week we will be seeing the comedies "You, Me and Dupree" starring Owen Wilson, and "Little Man" starring the Wayans Brothers (Sean and Marlon). So who's your money on? Will it be A) the movie starring an actor who's outrageous comedies have been hailed as some of the best in recent years, or B) the movie from the guys that brought you "White Chicks"?. Well regardless, it's a safe bet that "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" is going to get plenty of new and repeat bussiness. But who knows? Maybe Owen Wilson has the box-office draw it takes to claim the number one spot? Okay...I'm not really counting on Owen Wilson to beat out Johnny Depp, but stranger things have happened.
Til next time.
