BoxOffice Report July 2nd 2006

This week in the box-office report some obvious new additions have made their way to the top spots. First of course is Bryan Singer's long awaited "Superman Returns".The film, which has recieved a large number of positive reviews, has earned over $84 million since it's Wednesday release. Although it did not quite meet the $102 million record set by "X-Men" earlier this year, "Superman" did succeed in removing "X-men" from this weekend's list. The Anne Hathaway/Meryl Streep fashion comedy "The Devil Wears Prada" also proves quite popular with it's not too shabby $27 million opening in the shadow of a summer blockbuster. Adam Sandler is still king in his own way with "Click" placing just below the two newcomers. "Cars" and "Nacho Libre" are slowly being pushed downward, and "The Lake House" and "The Fast and the Furious 3" do a bit of a switch in placement. Not by much, so I doubt it has anything to do with people figuring out what the rest of us are missing. As mentioned before, "X-Men" has moved down to #11. Also missing is "Garfield 2". No info on if it will be missed...but I would assume not.
  1. Superman Returns / $52,150,000 / Reviews
  2. The Devil Wears Prada / $27,000,000
  3. Click / $19,4000,000 / Reviews
  4. Cars / $14,035,000 / Reviews
  5. Nacho Libre / $6,186,000
  6. The Lake House / $4,510,000 / Reviews
  7. The Fast and the Furious 3 / $4,432,000 / Reviews
  8. Waist Deep / $3,312,000
  9. The Break-Up / $2,830,000 / Reviews
  10. The Da Vinci Code / $2,300,000 / Reviews
Now that people have gotten "Superman" and "X-Men" out of their systems, the next week is sure to be all about the pirates. "Pirates of the Caribbean 2: Dead Man's Chest" will be number one or you can leave me on a deserted island to rot. Be you a comic book fan, or just out for a good movie it's very likely that you enjoyed the first so much that you have been eagerly awaiting the second installment. And if the trailers and Sheila Robert's early review have been any indication the second is going to be just as good if not better. Also incoming next week is the interesting "A Scanner Darkly" starring Keanu Reeves and Robert Downey Jr. The film uses a fairly new animation style called interpolated rotoscoping which actually uses real live-action footage that is then overlaid with the animation procedure giving the film an incredible feel that is likely meant to imitate the drug induced visions of the main characters. The film is rated "R" so please for the love of all that is holy leave the kids at home for this cartoon. You parents already made the mistake once for "South Park: Bigger, Longer, Uncut", so let's not have any repeat offenders. Should "Pirates" and "Scanner" be difficult to get into this weekend, you might also consider the upcoming "Edmond" with William H Macy about a man who tries to find inner-peace in what seems to be a night of living hell.
Until next time.
