Mary Shelleys Last Man MoviePosted by: MichaelMary Wollstonecraft Shelley is known worldwide for her Frankenstein monster but few outside of the literary world know that she also wrote another novel in the early 1800's called "The Last Man" about a 21st century pandemic that wipes out the entire population of the world, save one man, the last man on earth. One last solitary man with an automatic rifle under seige in a city full of cannibalistic mutants. An adrenaline pumping action picture about the ultimate outsider. The story begins in the former Soviet Union where looters scavenge through the remains of a remote bio-weapon laboratory in Siberia. They infect themselves with a super strain of small pox designed originally to destroy the West that quickly spreads from Europe into a pandemic that ravages the world.
Lionel Verney is an orderly at University Hospital when the plague decimates the population of Tucson, Arizona. Within weeks, Tucson is reduced to a ghost town, littered with corpses and the few survivors who suffer from dementia, blindness and open pox sores. Without the ability to search and find food, the blind and diseased turn to cannibalism in order to survive. Those few who can still see, and are well enough to find food on their own, become the masters of the blind dependent upon them for their survival. Lionel remains the last uninfected man, apparently immune to the effects of the plague. He quickly discovers that his 21st century morals and humanitarian values lead him down the road to extinction in the year "one" of the new world left behind by the pandemic. Once Lionel is forced to fight for his survival by raiding the food stockpiled by the diseased, he becomes known and dreaded for his violence against them. He becomes the creature of their nightmares; to the diseased, Lionel is "The Devil". But once the diseased begin to organize themselves into clans, Lionel discovers that they are changing, evolving into something not exactly human anymore, leaving him the last man on Earth at war with a new species of hominoid battling for dominance over the face of the world. Predating Vincent Price's "The Last Man On Earth", Charlton Heston's "The Omega Man" and even "I Am Legend" to star Will Smith in 2007, indie VFX company A.I.A. Productions owns the rights to the only existing screen adaptation of Mary Shelley's "The Last Man" novel, going into production next month in downtown Tucson, Arizona. Mary Shelley's "The Last Man" is an effects heavy independent feature production to be directed by James Arnett (Edgar Allen Poe's The Tell-Tale Heart, Just Another Box) and produced by Gabriele Andres (Take Me Somewhere Nice, Just Another Box). Stay tuned as we get more we will let you know!
