Spielberg to direct Warcraft?

In a bit of news that almost seems as unlikely as the whole "Paul Reubens to play the Joker in the next Batman movie" rumor, director Steven Spielberg is reportedly considering taking on the "Warcraft" movie. This will be a first for the director who has yet to try his hand at a video-game-to-film adaption, which seems like such an odd move for him; hence the disbelief. But I suppose if he had to pick a video-game flick to do, "Warcraft" would offer him the most to work with as far as characters, detail, and an over-all epic value.

"Warcraft" is based on the award winning video game series by Blizzard Entertainment. The best way to describe it as a massive world where warring races must battle eachother and even darker threats that intend on spreading like a plague. Fantasy, Magic, and steam technology dominate as Elves, Humans, Gnomes and Dwarves join forces against Orcs, Taurens, Trolls, and even the forsaken undead. It's going to be a crazy film regardless of who directs it in the end.

Legendary Pictures (Batman Begins, Superman Returns) has already bought the rights to the film from Blizzard Entertainment, so I would assume that Spielberg and Dreamworks will be working with them to bring the movie to life. Again I have no doubt that if Spielberg was to work on it, that the film would be one of the most intense and entertaining video-game adaptions to date. But I'm sure most people can agree that we won't count on Spielberg taking the reigns until he's officially in the director's chair.

Update: This has turned out to be nothing but a bad rumor. It has been debunked by Spielberg and Paramount also emailed to let us know it is 100% untrue. See : Steven Spielberg WarCraft Rumor is Not True
