BoxOffice Report June 11th, 2006Posted by: ShawnDisney and Pixar's "Cars" takes over in the box-office this weekend, showing up Vince Vaugn and Hugh Jackman alike. Although technically this is one of the smaller opening weekends that a Pixar film has managed, it's still about average for an animation film these days. Obviously it's not going to have the draw that "The Incredibles" had two years ago ($70million) due to it's subject matter. As my roommate would say "I'm not seeing a two-hour long Ford commercial". Meanwhile both "The Breakup" and "X-Men" take a huge dive in earnings this week.
The remake of "The Omen" is only #4 this weekend, but it's already had a bit of a head start since it's opening last Tuesday (To take advantage of the 06/06/06 date to further it's publicity). It's total gross actually comes to about $35,735,000 for the week. "Over the Hedge" and "The Da Vinci Code" fight over 5th and 6th places with only a $1,000 difference between the two of them. Additional Newcomer, the star-studded "A Prairie Home Companion" makes the list at #7. And the usual suspects "Mission: Impossible III", "RV", and "Poseidon" round out the weekend.
Next week the Summer Movies officially kick off with a handful of big-name films. "Nacho Libre", "Fast the Furious: Tokyo Drift", and "Garfield 2" topping the list. The intriguing "Lake House" and the very well-made documentary "Wordplay" also hit theaters. It's going to be a toss-up, but I'm thinking that Jack Black is going to rule the Box-Office this upcoming weekend. "Cars" is going to remain near the top, but it's likely we might finally bid a sad farewell to clingers "RV" and "Poseidon" as they will finally have some blockbuster competition. Until next time.
