BoxOffice Report May 29th, 2006

Does it really surprise anyone that "X-Men: The Last Stand" is not only the #1 movie in theaters this weekend, but now holds a record as the 4th highest opening weekend ever (Spider-Man, Star Wars Episode 3, and Shrek 2 being the top spots). And despite very dissapointed reviews, "The Da Vinci Code" is still holding it's own, making this weekend a little less than half of what it had made last week. The Dreamworks animated picture "Over the Hedge", while not doing as well as the fellow animated "Ice Age" had done in it's second (and several consecutive weeks) moved down a spot. Several week old blockbusters "M:I3" and "Poseidon" are still chugging along, obviously losing vast amounts of revenue due to the addition of "X-Men."
- X-men: The Last Stand / $107,000,000 / Reviews
- The Da Vinci Code / $33,500,000 / Reviews
- Over the Hedge / $27,273,000 / Reviews
- Mission: Impossible 3 / $6,584,000 / Reviews
- Poseidon / $5,900,000 / Reviews
- RV / $3,900,000 /
- See No Evil / $2,530,000
- Just My Luck / $1,800,000
- United 93 / $740,000 / Reviews
- An American Haunting / $700,000 / Reviews
Next weekend Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Anniston fight over a condo in "The Break-Up", but they're going to have to fight even harder if they want to dethrone "X-Men" this early in the game. Lower spectrum movies "District B13" and "Peaceful Warrior" also open next week, but I don't think we will be seeing too much of a change in the box-office results until Pixar/Disney's "Cars" opens the weekend after. In fact it seems likely that X-Men is going to keep a strong foothold on the top half of the Box-Office report for the next several weeks, likely loosing momentum once it has to contend with "Superman" and "Pirates".
Until next time.
