Hazel: The Complete First Season on DVD August 1stPosted by: Michael
Academy Award® and two-time Emmy® winner Shirley Booth shines on DVD August 1 as everyone’s favorite housekeeper in Hazel: The Complete First Season from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. Featuring all 35 episodes in a four-disc set, the series will be priced at $39.95 SRP.
Based on the cartoons by Ted Key that appeared regularly in the Saturday Evening Post, Hazel made its network debut as a half-hour sitcom on NBC September 28, 1961. The series was an immediate critical and ratings success, ending its first season as the number four show on television. During the five-season/150-episode run of Hazel, Booth would receive three Emmy nominations, winning twice.
The success of the program was due in large part to the sassy presence of Shirley Booth in the title role. A longtime stage actress, Booth won a "Best Actress" Academy Award for her searing portrayal of a desperate woman married to a younger man in the film version of her Tony®Award-winning Broadway triumph Come Back Little Sheba. Miss Booth also received two other Tonys, for Goodbye My Fancy and Time of the Cuckoo. Although her film career was brief, she was also noted for starring in the original film version of Thornton Wilder’s The Matchmaker (1958) which later became the hit musical Hello Dolly!.
The series focuses on Hazel Burke (Booth), the live-in maid and housekeeper for the Baxter family. George Baxter (Don DeFore), a successful corporate lawyer, manages to maintain strict control of his life during office hours. But upon returning home to his wife Dorothy (Whitney Blake) and their son Harold (Bobby Buntrock), George enters the world of Hazel. Running the Baxter household more efficiently than George runs his office, Hazel is always right, knows exactly what needs doing, and pre-empts the authority of "Mr. B" (as she affectionately calls him) with alarming, though justified, regularity. John Astin from TV’s "The Addams Family" guest-stars in the episode entitled "The Investment Club."
