BoxOffice Report May 21st, 2006

It should come as no suprise this week that Ron Howard's "The Da Vinci Code" would top the chart. Neither should it come as a suprise that it also has pulled in the highest grossing opening weekend for any movie so far this year. Despite lack-luster reviews, fans of the book have been waiting a long time for this release, packing theaters across the US. Everyone should also take note that "Ice Age: The Meltdown", after 8 weeks, no longer has a spot in the top 10 (it has moved down to #12). This is completely due to the release of Dreamwork's animated feature "Over the Hedge". While not making nearly as much as "Ice Age" did it's opening week, "Over the Hedge" has given audiences something new in the talking animals department. "Mission: Impossible", "Poseidon", and "RV" have moved down for the newcomers, but still remain high on the list. The horror feature "See No Evil" starring the wrestler Kane also managed to find a spot at #6 showing that slasher flicks are still in.
- The Da Vinci Code / $77,000,000 / Reviews
- Over the Hedge / $37,228,000 / Reviews
- Mission: Impossible 3 / $11,015,000 / Reviews
- Poseidon / $9,200,000 / Reviews
- RV / $5,100,000 /
- See No Evil / $4,350,000
- Just My Luck / $3,375,000
- An American Haunting / $1,663,000 / Reviews
- United 93 / $1,426,000 / Reviews
- Akeelah and the Bee / $1,000,000
Next week will be a very interesting moment in movie history. Normally it is common place to find several movies releasing every Friday. However next week is X-tra special. "X-Men 3" is expected to pull in so much bussiness at the box-office no film has decided to try and compete with it during the extra long memorial day weekend. Needless to say, "The Da Vinci Code" is not going to be staying at the #1 spot for long. Technically on Wednseday there will be one additional release this week: "An Inconvenient Truth", Al Gores' environmental documentary on Global Warming. I would assume the Wednesday opening is to give people looking forward to the film a chance to see it before they have to devout their weekend to X-Men. Hmm. Documentary about the environment...or a crazy-go-nutz action movie about mutants. Decisions decisions...
Until next time.
