Batman vs. Superman, The Dream of World's Finest

Posted by: Jerrica

Ever since Frank Miller's "Dark Knight Returns" graphic novel in which Batman and Superman face one another as opposing powers, the premise of the two biggest superheroes in the DC comics universe, often appropriately dubbed "World's Finest," squaring off and bumping heads has fascinated fans and kept them cheering for their favorite in the most well-done juxtaposition in comics history. It's the perfect match, or mismatch rather, and it has been done in comic books and animated series’, but there's never been a live action feature length film.

The closest we've come to seeing "World's Finest" realized is a surprisingly well-orchestrated, well-executed fan vid trailer for a movie that does not exist. Sandy Collora brought the internet fan community his short film "Batman: Dead End," and his "World's Finest" teaser has proved the closest and most tantalizing of all movie media to touch the DC pairing of Batman and Superman, mixing the lives and contrasting the identities and personalities of Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent as well as their super alter egos. It's an admirable effort, and it gets an A in my book for genuine comic fan geek-out material.

But, a more official version may be on the way. Yes, as with everything else in the realm of comics these days, talk of a movie has been circulating. And, this may not come anytime in the near future, but "Poseidon" director Wolfgang Petersen expressed a hopeful interest in making "Batman vs. Superman" a big screen reality. Petersen told SuperheroHype, "I hope it still will happen because they are so different as we know. The dark Batman and the sort of goody goody Superman. It's so nice to play with both and see how the dynamic between the two also including fighting between the two how that would work."

The potential is enormous and Petersen, who was also the directorial force behind "Troy" and "The Perfect Storm," proclaims that he is always interested in pursuing the potential of this grand project. Whether it's Petersen or someone else, if a "World's Finest" film does come to fruition, be prepared. If they can find just the right actors, or perhaps even go to Brandon Routh for Superman from "Superman Returns" and Christian Bale for Batman from "Batman Begins" using established casting, and if they can come up with a script that blends the worlds of Metropolis and Gotham and their elements to a satisfying degree; if they can work all that out and get a production rolling, fanboy nirvana itself may be what's at stake. Check out a cool trailer right here why dont you.
