BoxOffice Report May 14th, 2006Posted by: ShawnAlthough it only made half of what it made last week, "Mission Impossible" holds it's place at the number 1 spot this weekend. So far Tom Cruise has brought in a grand total of $84,635,000 for Paramount, which should be making them pretty happy. Joining the list this weekend is the Warner Bros' "Poseidon" with a reasonable starting gross for a pre-summer action flick. "RV" is pushed down a spot this week and "An American Haunting" loses it's spot to newcomer "Just My Luck".
It's surprising that "United 93" and "Stick It" remain on the list after their third week (Even though they are both very well-made films) but I guess there hasn't been much else of superior nature to compete with. "Ice Age", now in it's 7th week of release, is holding on tightly near the bottom of the top ten, trying to squeeze in that last week of box-office gross before "Over the Hedge" will likely give it enough competition to remove it from the list completely. "Silent Hill" is quickly moving into obscurity now that the hardcore fans have all seen their fill of it. And Disney's "Hoot" remains just where it was last week at #10. Most may notice that "Scary Movie 4" has dropped from the list and is now technically resting at #11 with just over a $2 million weekend gross.
Next week some hefty competition is about to give this weeks top-films a run for their money. First of course will be "The Da Vinci Code", which is one of the most anticipated features to be released this year. And with Tom Hanks starring, it's sure to attract more than just the die-hard fans of the book. I doubt that Mission: Impossible, going into it's third week, will be able to match the numbers. Also opening next week is "Over the Hedge" which, as already mentioned, is sure to remove "Ice Age" from the list (and then some). With few animated films this year to take the kids to, I think the success of "Ice Age" illustrates just what an effect a feature-length cartoon can have on movie-goers. Horror/thriller "See No Evil" also will be released next week, but if it does make it on the list, be prepared to find it at the bottom. Until next time.
