2006 MTV Movie Award NomineesPosted by: JerricaMTV has announced nominations for its 2006 Movie Awards, and the spectrum runs from comics to fantasy to groundbreaking drama. The pre-recorded awards show will air on Thursday, June 8th at 9pm Eastern and Pacific Time. Estimates are that it will be seen in 479.5 million households worldwide across 171 countries, being broadcast in 23 different languages. Some of the nominations give credit to roles and moments that are otherwise overlooked or disregarded by mainstream awards shows, and while it isn't Oscar, it's a nice nod to the films and their stars. Superhero and comic films are among the thickest competition. "Batman Begins" and "Sin City" are both up for Best Movie. In the category of Best On-Screen Team, we have Jessica Alba, Ioan Gruffudd, Chris Evans, and Michael Chiklis up for their combined heroics in "Fantastic Four." For the part of Scarecrow (aka Jonathan Crane) that he played with chilling perfection in "Batman Begins," Cillian Murphy is in line for Best Villain. But, the heavy contender in that category is Hayden Christensen for Anakin's turn to the dark side as he becomes Darth Vader in "Revenge of the Sith." Another "Batman Begins" nominee is of course Christian Bale for Best Hero. He is also up against an "Episode III" star, namely Ewan McGregor for Obi-Wan Kenobi. On the platform for Sexiest Performance, Jessica Alba received a second spot on the list of nominees for the stripper character of Nancy in "Sin City." Frank Miller's comic book film adaptation also popped up in the Best Kiss category, specifically Clive Owen and Rosario Dawson. There are plenty of other reasons for fans from every cult of moviegoers to get excited. Kate Beckinsale is up for Best Hero for "Underworld: Evolution." "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" is up for Best On-Screen Team (Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint) as well as Best Villain (Ralph Fiennes). "The Chronicles of Narnia" brought Tilda Swinton a nod in the Best Villain category. And, the chemistry between Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt in "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" got them simultaneous Best Fight and Best Kiss nominations. But, Best Fight is probably going to Christensen and McGregor for Anakin and Obi-Wan's big battle scene in "Revenge of the Sith." Naturally, there are some very amusing nominations, some of which are less amusing than they are dizzying, but they're at the very least entertaining. For instance, The "Dukes of Hazzard" movie cropped up on MTV's radar for Best On-Screen Team (Johnny Knoxville, Seann William Scott, and Jessica Simpson) as well as Sexiest Performance (Jessica Simpson). Paris Hilton is counted in the running for Best Frightened Performance for "House of Wax." Also, "The Wedding Crashers" and "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" can be found in a few categories each. ComingSoon.net listed a more complete roster of the nominees and provided this comment from MTV's President, Christina Norman; "This year's Movie Awards will be more than an awards show -- it's an experience completely inspired by the movies, and everything we love about them." The most notable thing about the MTV Movie Awards this year that certainly does make it unique is that categories will not be separated by male and female. It's a bold move doing away with gender significance by having men and women compete in the same category. And, it's fitting that this move is made by an awards show geared to youth who seem to be evolving into a more progressive generation. Or, that seems to be true, considering that this year's awards nominated the controversial movie about homosexuality that was presented in the form of an American icon, the cowboy. "Brokeback Mountain" rustled up two nominations, one for Jake Gyllenhaal for Best Performance and one for Jake and Heath Ledger for Best Kiss.
