BoxOffice Report: April 23rd, 2006

Posted by: Shawn
Welcome to another exciting edition of the BoxOffice Results! In our third week in April we see some new releases have shot to the top, and a few have done way less than expected. Once again reviews haven't done much to deter (or encourage) the number count for the current movies now playing. Shooting up to #1 in its first weekend is the survival horror video-game adaption "Silent Hill". Despite the poor reviews for the highly anticipated (and therein lies the key) movie starring Rahda Mitchell and Sean Bean it managed to remove Scary Movie 4 from it's lead. Also new this week is The Sentinel starring Michael Douglas and Kiefer Sutherland coming in at #3. Ice Age moves down 2 spots to finally make way for newer movies. And the biggest upset this week is the new release American Dreamz coming in at a pathetic #8 for it's opening weekend.
  1. Silent Hill ($20,200,000) Reviews
  2. Scary Movie 4 ($17,034,000)  Review
  3. The Sentinel ($14,650,000)
  4. Ice Age: The Meltdown ($12,800,000) Review
  5. The Wild ($8,050,000) Review
  6. The Benchwarmers ($7,300,000) Review
  7. Take the Lead ($4,250,000) Review
  8. American Dreamz ($3,690,000) Reviews
  9. Inside Man ($3,668,000) Reviews
  10. Friends With Money ($3,551,000) Review
Of the current list I would strongly suggest "American Dreamz". "Silent Hill" was only a sub-par movie in my eyes, although I have yet to see the Sentinel (something I intend on resolving soon). Several weeks after it's release, "Ice Age", despite moving down this week, has had a pretty impressive run thusfar and has grossed a total of $167,863,000 in it's 4th week run. Surprisingly the Antonio Banderas dance film "Take the Lead" remains in the top 10. So if people aren't watching movies about evil towns, or fuzzy prehistoric animals, they are partaking in some actual culture? I might just have to see this movie.

That's it for the report this week. Next week I am going to put my money on "Silent Hill" and "Scary Movie" to remain at the top. Of the newest movies to be released next Friday, I would say that "Stick it" or "R.V" will make the most. I don't feel the US is ready for movies based on 9/11 events such as the upcoming "United 93", but that remains to be seen. Until next time, guys.
