Pitch Black Directors Cut Movie Review by Atarichild

I love this movie so for once this won't be a five paragraph bitch session from me.  when i first saw it i wasn't so in love with it. i thought the riddick character was awesome but the rest of the people were annoying (the "captain" Fry the most)
the movie is about a freight ship in the far (or near) future travelling through space carrying a bunch of passengers. some are going to new mecca (the muslim world) and one is being transported back to slam which is a cool world i like to use for prison. the special prisoner is named Richard B Riddick and he's already escaped from the worst slam in the galaxy: butcher bay (see my review of the game for that one)  the ship takes on some damage from a passing metor shower that punches holes in the captain. the cargo girl (fry) and the second in command are the only crew left as they are plummeting to a planet that looks like tattoine on a bad day. Fry is going to jettison the cargo which is 40+ people. the second in command stops her and they crash bad into the surface. the second in command (i'm sorry if i don't know his name. he's in the movie long enough to scream so i don't find it necessary to mention his name) is hurt real bad in the crash and he ends up with a big god almighty piece of metal through his chest. they look for morphine to give him but it's all gone as the survivors just looks among themselves.

oh i forgot to mention the special prisoner has escaped from a wicked bad set up in hypersleep.

so begins the mystery ofthis desert planet where there's three suns making nightfall next to impossible. they also have to worry about a convicted murderer running around. but there is worse than him just below the surface and that is the whole concept of the movie. fight evil with evil when they have to turn to riddick to save their proverbial bacon. because once every 22 years an eclipse happens and the monsters from eblow swarm up and kill every living thing on the surface. but on thier side is riddick who can see in the dark.

now i'm sure if you've read this far and not noticed any spoilers thats because i'm talking about the directors cut kiddies. the director's cut sometimes ruins a movie (like the butterfly effect. good lord the original ending was stupid and pointless) but in this instance it filled in gaps that didn't need filling but once you've seen them you wonder how you went without. we find out why johns (cole hauser) the bounty hunter/merc is addicted to morphine...why you ask? because when riddick escaped butcher bay he stabbed jonhs in the spine and there's still a piece of the shiv in his spine. little factoids like that made johns a more sympathetic character in my eyes.

the other changes are a bit more gore. more of the survivors just walking around which added to the desolation. quite a bit more of riddick speaking cryptically and more doubt casting on why riddick is helping them. because the last time he tried to escape somewhere he killed the pilot.

the questions it raises are many but it answers most of them and you can definitly tellthere wasn't going to be a whole series of riddick movies but the public has spoken they love the bad motherf*cker with the welding goggles on. i still haven't seen the cartoon by peter chung called dark fury but bet your ass as soon as i do it will be reviewed on here.
i give
Chronicles of Riddick : Pitch Black (director's cut) a 10 out of 10
