Wherefore Art Thou Gnomeo?

Elton John may still be able to finish producing his "Gnomeo and Juliet" animated feature, despite last month's reports that the Walt Disney Feature Animation company dropped the project. According to several sources the project was picked up by Disney's Miramax branch and both Miramax and John's production company Rocket Pictures are happy to be working together.

"I am very excited about working with Miramax, 'Gnomeo is an edgy concept, and Miramax is the perfect home to push the envelope in animation." said John during an interview.

The feature will be the overused story of Romeo and Juliet, but instead it will star gnomes (mythical tiny people that live in trees). The gimmick they are using to sell the idea is that Elton John will provide the lyrics for the film which is to be a musical adaption of the Shakespeare play. John last worked with the Disney company in 1994 on The Lion King.

To me the concept isn't anything to new or even that creative. If anything it reminds me of the Nelvana Limited production of "Romie-O and Julie-8" back in 1979 which was a 30 minute animated musical about robots doing the Shakespeare thing. Even the name makes me think that the movie is going to be too much of an overdose of cuteness. I'm just not feeling the love tonight.
