Mel Brooks Brings Frank to BroadwayPosted by: ShawnWith the recent success of "The Producers", Mel Brooks announced on the internet radio show The Young Turks that "Mel Brooks is bringing Young Frank to Broadway in 07". Refering to his 1974 classic "Young Frankenstein", Brooks is adapting it as a musical and bringing it to the stage next year.
For those of you not familiar with the plot, The grandson of Victor Frankenstein (played in the original film by Gene Wilder) inherits his grandfather's estate in Transylvania. Despite his "critiscm" of his grandfather's work, young Frederick Frankenstein (and remember it's E before I) comes across Victor's lab and decides to follow in his footsteps. The results of course are pretty damn silly.
I will be interested in seeing who is cast as Frederick Frankenstein. In my mind there is no one better than Gene Wilder, but I would like to be hopeful. I'm also going to assume that once (or if) this becomes a hit on Broadway, that a new movie adaption will be made. Mel Brooks' 1968 film "The Producers" was the first film he adapted into a Broadway Musical, and shortly after remade the film based on the stage version. Given that "Young Frankenstein" already contains a song and dance number, I think that it could work. I do pray though that he's not considering the same treatment with "Spaceballs"
