Taking Lives Movie Review

after seeing tons of trailers for this movie i figured what the heck. might as well rent it. if the movie sucked i can have a cheap excuse to stare at angelina jolie and those giant lips of hers in full view of my fiance and not get called on it. and on the funny side it was her idea to rent it (i rented series one and two of the office)

so the movie is about a serial killer named martin who has spent the last twenty something years killing people brutally (by strangling them and then bashing in their heads with rocks) and taking over their identities. already i'm thinking this movie might show promise after the strange opening so i'm somewhat intrigued. a construction site is digging and they find a victim with his head caved in. eyes missing from his sockets, and his hands cut off. so they call in special agent scott (jolie)

the first time we see her shes lying in the hole that they found the dead guy in....for what reason? none that i could see. in the novel i'm sure this was explained a bit better but in the movie it was fairly pointless.

this takes place in canada and alot of the cops shes working with have thick french accents that my puny american brain could not understand half the time. i did know the nice police man was the bad guy from bad boys so whilst watching i was doing my worst french impression and making even sadder bad boys comments (when i don't like a movie it's fairly hard to sit next to me...unless you're into that kind of thing)

so the cops actually have a witness to a new crime and it's mr Gattaca himself ethan hawke. he plays an art dealer/artist (i'm not sure which) who witnesses the keeeler choking some guy out and bashing his face in. the police think he did it angelina jolie is intrigued with this charming guy with one long tooth in the front. Kieffer sutherland is in it for reasons i can't even fathom....honestly this movie sucked but i can't explain it. it was as if something were missing.

perhaps i liked it better when it was one of the silence of the lambs/hannibal books (this is sarcasm, but it's obvious this movie wanted to be a silence of the lambs meets se7en reaaaaaalllly bad) anyway there are several cheap scares like a body falling from a cieling at just the perfect time. (i sometimes wonder how serial killers and movie mass murderers time that to be exactly when the hero or whomever is looking right there.) and a sex scene that even made me wince. i mean i like anglina jolie as much as the next hetrosexual but i swear this scene had penetration. it disturbed me and i want my 1.00 back.

overall i would give this movie a six out of ten. it's strange because my brain keeps telling me it was a good movie but something was off.

it was like when i rented gothika and after it was done i said "that is the best movie i never want to see again" taking lives .......*struggles with the words*...sucked
