My Trip to Wizard World Chicago

Posted by:
Last year when I attended Wizard World Chicago (WWC) for the first time I was blown away. I had never been to such a huge event before. Once I left that convention center that day I knew I would come back next year for all three days. Since then though I have went to several conventions and after awhile you've seen everything.

This year when I went in threw the front doors I knew what to expect. Yes it was crowded and their were ALOT of exhibitors. It just didn't have the same impact. Nonetheless I still had a great time and met some really cool people.

Friday being my first day not much happened. I walked around rather quickly just to get a feel of what was going on and where I should defintely check out on the next two days. I only attended one panel that day and it was Joe Quesadas Cup O' Joe panel. There nothing movie wise was mentioned just alot of comics news. That night however they had the Wizard World fan awards. It was a good time and the presenters ranged everywhere from Galactus, the consumer of worlds, to Kevin Smith.

Saturday was set to be my best day of them all. Kevin Smith had a Q&A that day that I really wanted to get into. Only problem was that you needed a ticket to attend. Unfortunately the line to get a ticket was endless and I had no chance at scoring a ticket. Oh well I could still check out the Batman Begins panel. It wasn't all it was cracked up to be but we got to ask the screenwriter David Goyer about the film and he treated us to the trailer and a little goodie as we left the panel.

Next up for me was going to be the Star Wars Episode 3 panel but when they cleared out the room for that panel a line filled with Storm Troopers and about 5 Darth Vaders were already waiting. I wasn't too disappointed about that because I knew the next day they would have the same panel.

So the last day of WWC had come. It seemed like it had flew by. But I had no time to ponder this as it was time for the Star Wars Episode 3 panel. It was really cool and we got to see several art concepts for the movie. Not to mention several clips of the climatic fight sequence between Anakin and Obi wan. Of course the clips were shown with the green screen behind them but it gave us a taste of whats to come. They also showed some behind the scenes footage of Anakin donning the Darth Vader helmet for the first time.

We also got to see art concepts for Wookie planet. Several of which we were told will not be used in the film. The Wookies will be part costume part CGI. The actors inside the wookie costumes were Austrailan basket ball players. I guess thats the way to go if you don't want to spend too much cash.

The next panel is what made my whole trip worth making and then some. The Vertigo panel with director Francis Lawrence. The focus of the panel was all on Constantine. The first movie out of DC's Vertigo imprint. We got to see a special 18 minute preview for the film. I have to say this will be the next blockbuster film. It looked amazing. The film stars Keanu Reeves and Rachel Weisz.

Reeves plays John Constantine, a supernatural detective who helps Weiszs' character, Angela Dodson, to discover why her sister comitted suicide. He travels through hell and back to unravel the mystery. Along the way he runs into a few angels and has a kick ass shoot out with a ton of demons.

If I had to rate this preview it would be a 10. This film is so many things rolled up into one. The largest chunk of this film is horror and I jumped several times during the preview. I will now be keeping a close eye on this film for it is now on my "must see list".

Soon I will have some pictures up for the event so keep checking back for those. As you are reading this I am making plans to attend San Diego Comic Con next year. Hopefully on my way back I will hit up WWC again as well. This is Luke your resident Movie Goon signing off..
