Box Office Report January 29th 2005
Posted by: The Dude
Dude here again with the box office report, just a day late. Big Momma's House 2 ruled the box office? Seriously? No, really, I mean it, has it come to that? Is this what we're telling the world? That we desperately all the loose ends from the first film tied up six years later? C'mon, people. This week, a bunch of films were... no, wait. I don't think I can go on. Big Momma's House 2?!?!? This disturbs me. Like a lot. It shakes my essence to the core. I don't think I can go outside and face the world anymore. It's truly frightening. I used to have faith in humanity. Now I don't know what to believe anymore. Let's go to the numbers, shall we? (All in millions, remember, and these are the studio estimates. Numbers could change on Tuesday).
- Big Momma's House 2 (Fox) - $28.0, 3261 screens, week 1, $28.0 total
- Nanny McPhee (Uni) - $14.085, 1995 screens, week 1, $14.085 total
- Underworld: Evolution (ScrGems)- $11.1, 3207 screens, week 2, $44.3 total
- Annapolis (BV) - $7.7, 1605 screens, week 1, $7.7 total
- Hoodwinked (Weinstein Company)- $7.38, 3020 screens, week 3, $37.67 total
- Brokeback Mountain (Focus) - $6.35, 1654 screens, week 8, $50.8 total
- Glory Road (BV) - $5.16, 2397 screens, week 3, $34.766 total
- Last Holiday (Par) - $4.8, 2442 screens, week 3, $32.6 total
- The Chronicles of Narnia (BV) - $4.4, 2170 screens, week 8, $277.773 total
- The Matador (NL) - $3.8, 885 screens, week 5, $5.5 total
Ok, those are the numbers, so what does this all mean? Big Momma's House 2? And it almost matches the opening of the previous one? That hurts. Just plain hurts. Everyone I see from now on has a small chance of being one of the people who contributed to this happening. C'mon. I can't even continue. If you're Nanny Mcphee, you did well. But not enough to best Big Momma's House 2.
If you're James Franco, your box office clout is nothing without the word Spider or the word Man in the title. I'm sorry, I like you as an actor (Great Raid was da bomb diggity, and you had the same name as my grandfather) but Tristan and Isolde two weeks ago, and now Annapolis. Two January releases, neither which opened to good reviews or much box office, dude. Not to mention, you had the bad luck of opening against Big Momma's House 2.
Underworld dropped 57% from last week. which is approximately 57% than Big Momma's House 2 The Matador opened up a bit in it's 5th week, and did some impressive business. But it was no Big Momma's House 2 business. Everything else dropped significantly. I'm not gonna bore you with with the percentage drops. But they were significantly less than Big Momma's House 2.
Below the radar, Steven Soderbergh released his latest film Bubble in theaters AND on HD pay per view this Friday. It played on 32 screens, garnering about $72,000 in those theaters. I couldn't find accurate reports as far as audiences with the Pay Per View, but the film will also be released on DVD this Tuesday. This experiment could determine the future of releasing films, meaning that if it proves successful, in 6 years you'd have the choice of seeing Big Momma's House 3 in a theater, on Pay Per View, or on DVD all within 5 days of each other.
And in the "just because it's there and because I can" series: FREAKIN' BIG MOMMA'S HOUSE 2 took in $28.0 million in it's 3 FREAKIN' DAYS, bringing it's total to $28,000,000. There you have my wonderful break down. Next week, we have something coming out. But does it really matter? Today? Next Week? We let this happen. How? WHY!?! Until next weekend....
