Office Space ReviewPosted by:Office Space has been high on my list of favorite comedies ever since I first saw it. This was Mike Judge’s first major motion picture and he did an outstanding job with great characters, hilarious situations and a great setting. So, without further ado, lets get into the movie shall we? Office Space starts with our main character Peter (Ron Livingston) driving to work. He is stuck in traffic and is plagued with the other-lane-always-seems-to-move-faster syndrome. Of course after waiting for so long he switches over to the fast moving lane and it promptly stops. As if on cue the lane he WAS in begins moving at a fast pace. Not to be outdone he switches back and BRAKE. The line stops. Ever been in that situation before? I know I have! And this is just the beginning of the movie! During the drive to work we also meet two of Peter’s co-workers; Michael Bolton (David Herman of Mad TV fame) and Samir Nagheenanajar (Ajay Naidu). And no, Michael Bolton is not related to the singer! Once they all arrive at work (and hike a mile to the door) we see that Peter is not happy in his job. All he does all day is sit in his cube, get harassed by his 8 bosses and stare at his desk pretending to work. I think all of us who have worked in an office environment know that this is the life we lead. Boring. Predictable. Tedious. Peter is in a rut, some might say, and the depression it beginning to wear on him. To make matters worse his boss, Bill Lumbergh (Gary Cole), catches him before he has a chance to sneak out and asks him to come in and work on Saturday and Sunday. That night, his girlfriend Anne (Alexandra Wentworth) takes him to an occupational hypnotherapist to see what can be done for Peter. The therapist proceeds to place Peter under hypnosis so that he can perform some sort of procedure. What happens, however, is the therapist has a heart attack JUST as Peter enters a state of total relaxation. From that point on Peter just doesn’t care about work anymore! The next day (which is Saturday) Peter wakes up to his alarm, looks at it, and goes back to sleep. He sleeps all morning while his answering machine is bombarded with messages from his boss (Yea hi, it’s Bill Lumb…Hi, Bill Lumbergh here….Just stepped away from my desk, thought you might have called). From now on Peter feels as though he is in control of his life. He doesn’t work because he doesn’t like his job and only shows up when he feels like it (usually to play a game of Tetris on his work computer!), asks the girl out at the local restaurant who he has had his eye on for a while (played by the beautiful Jennifer Aniston) and just basically enjoys life. While all this carefree living is going on the company decides to bring in ‘consultants’ to evaluate who is needed at the company and who can go. Needless to say this makes for some more laughs, especially when it comes to Peters character. There is so much hilarity in this movie it’s outstanding. Every character makes you laugh in their own special way. In fact I haven’t even mentioned Milton yet, who was the basis for the entire movie! Milton (Stephen Root) is the office weirdo that we have all worked with at one time or another. He is a squirrelly kind of guy who no one really talks to or understands. He definitely has some of the funnier scenes in the movie (Have you seen my stapler?). All in all, Office Space is one of those comedies that is great on it’s own, but when one works or has worked in an office environment it is that much funnier as you yourself have dealt with similar situations as the characters in the movie do. We’ve all had the jerk of a boss asking us to stay late or annoying/weird co-workers who we just couldn’t stand. But I think this movie really brings all us office (and ex-office) folk together and laugh out loud at ourselves! A great movie that should be in everyone’s personal collection! Source: Blurr
