Tartan's FACE, Worth it? Yes and No

Posted by: Michael

Face is easily one of the coolest sounding movies and I have been praising the cover art for some time but alot of people really want to know, is it anygood? Well yes and no. FACE is a very good looking movie with the start of a seriously cool story that falls apart mid stream. The directorial debut of Korean filmmaker Yoo Sang-gon, FACE came out on DVD September 27th

In FACE the police are hot on the trail of a serial killer who uses acid on his victims leaving behind only the bones, the police turn to Hyun-min, a former forensic sculptor adept in reconstructing faces by examining and interpreting skulls.

With the victims' bones in his house, Hyun-min's daughter experiences disturbing visions of a long-haired woman in a white robe, a woman whom she may know. As he races against time to find the answers before the visions overtake his daughter, the deadly truth behind these victims reveals a sinister conspiracy that threatens everyone involved.

The movie is very well shot and the sound is really cool and it had many moments that really creeped me out. Mind you I am the first to admit that I am a big pussy with asian horro to, so that doesnt say to much.

I found the acting to be well done and most importantly the sub-titles made sense. There is nothing worse then getting a movie and having the sub-titles make absolutely NO sense what so ever. This movie didnt fall into the trap of a cheap commercial film with little or no value to true asian horror fans. Ok so with the praise out of the way it is time to share my beef.

In this movie we have the return of the pale skinned, dark haired creepy little girl that has been in just about every asian film I have seen this year, which makes me think "wtf?". This movie has a great premise and it really goes to waste by throwing in the a-typical creepy kid in the closet. With that said I am sure that people who enjoyed and apppreciated The Ring and The Grudge are going to love this movie. So overall I say Asian Horror Fans will truly appreciate FACE but folks who didnt like the Grudge or The Ring, should probably pass on this one.

Korean with English and Spanish subtitles, Face is presented in anamorphic widescreen, Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound and DTS Surround Sound 5.1.  Special DVD features include interview with the director, cast and crew; behind-the-scenes photo shoot; outtakes; photo gallery; and trailers of Tartan Asia Extreme’s upcoming releases.
