Blood Deep Film Reflections

"A reunion of childhood friends turns deadly... ...when someone admits to murder."

"Blood Deep", the freshman feature outing for director Todd Kniss and the creative team at Dead Horse Productions, is a very good representative for the independent horror/thriller community. It is a film that stands out in my memory for its’ patience and deliberate motives, and for providing a fresh source of horror and suspense for genre fans tired of teenage clichés and plot decomposition. The film holds together throughout, tightly following a prescribed destination and fulfilling narrative responsibility to close loose ends, a fete not accomplished by many independent films. And it’s a fun movie to watch.

The film opens with a child getting murdered during a game of hide-n-seek. His body is discovered a few days later by a group of kids, one of whom was playing with him at the time he disappeared.

Flash-forward about 17 years and all the kids are back in their hometown and have a reunion party at one of the girl’s newly inherited homes. The group decides to toy around with hypnotism, which leads to the revelation of secrets surrounding the childhood murder. Strange things begin to happen, some of it is really fun, and murder and chaos ensue.

To be frankly honest, it is a much better horror/thriller film than the majority of indie fright flicks cruising the festival circuit, and the slice-em dice-um's available for rental at the local video store. “Blood Deep" is attractively shot, well lit, and played by a graceful cast comprised of quirky talent and some very good-looking women. Above all, it is a film that is obviously made for the fans, full of stunts, underwater shots, and the other assorted goodies every thriller needs.

I was lucky to catch “Blood Deep" on opening night of Indiefest Chicago, and found it to stand out among the crowd. If you are one of the many, many fans of good thrillers out there that are bored with trash-slash, keep an eye on the status of this film as it is in the market for distribution and is currently doing the rounds at festivals worldwide.
