Danny Deckchair Movie Review

Posted by: Daniel

When your younger brother tells you about a film called "Danny Deckchair", you begin to wonder how many genes you actually share, but as he goes on for 15 minutes about how good it is and how much you will like it, you can't help but go out and pick it up out of the New Releases!

And I'm glad I did.

"Danny Deckchair" is therefore honorarily Charlie's pick for the month of July. It's a 2003 Australian romantic comedy that feels good and is easy to take in without feeling that oh-so soaked in sap feeling you get with flowery films.

Danny is bored with his hum-drum existence in suburban Sidney, and has a big camping week planned for his vacation. His girlfriend, Trudy, is an up-and-coming real estate agent who has just landed a big meeting with a local news reporter, who she has a crush on. So they cancel the vacation, and Danny gets restless and lost in shenanagins at home all week, alone.

The couple has a "barbie" with friends, and Danny tries to break up the monotony by filling up balloons with helium and tieing them to a lawnchair to see if it will make him float away. They end up putting too many on, and off he goes, unable to return back to the ground on his own. Meanwhile, the news media is eating up the event and everyone in Australia is following the Danny Deckchair story. Soon, Trudy becomes more well acquainted with the reporter and develops a relationship with him...

Danny gets his vacation after all by touring the countryside from the sky, and eventually ends up crashing down in the back yard of Glenda's (georgeous Lord of the Rings star Eowyn/Miranda Otto) house in the small-town of Clarence. The two are immediately attracted to eachother, and Danny takes refuge in her spare bedroom.

The film then plays out with Danny becoming the spirit of the community, enlivening Glenda's life and the lives of everyone he meets while Trudy is enjoying her new found celebrity status back home. Danny tries to tell Glenda about where he came from, but she is enjoying the fantasy too much and won't let him.

Of course, things come full circle and Danny has to face Trudy and the media in a run-away-bride moment, however, the right people make the right decisions and the ending is expectedly a happy one.

All around, the film is goofy and full of spirit. Uplifting and touchingly perfect for the happy ending feel good comedy lover in all of us.

Funny for the guys and the girls, and non-confrontational. Just about any audience would warmly appreciate a nice break from Hollywood cheeseball date flicks, don't you think it's time you picked up "Danny Deckchair"???

9.5/10 for Romatic Comedies, this one takes the cake. Almost perfect.
