Moviemaven: Revenge of the Nerds

This is one of my favorite films of all time. It is wacky and not at all serious. The perfect film for a weekend of goofin around with nothing to do. If you have never seen this film, you are a lost soul and must seek redemption. It is most assuredly a classic. Ooo, ah, Alpha Beta... ooo, ah, Alpha Beta...

Two lifelong friends (portrayed by Robert Carradine and Anthony Edwards) have finally gone off to college. Unfortunately, these guys are two of the biggest nerds on the face of the earth. Combine that with the fact that they are freshmen, and you've got trouble...

Deadman: Tigerland

This is another hidden gem that just needs to be seen. More of a "heavy drama" than one of action (one might expect from a "war film") – but with a tight script and excellent dialogue, it is the actors that truly drive this movie. Rent it tonight.. and don't be surprised with how much you really like this film.

1971. A nation stands divided over the escalating war in Vietnam. Thousands of young Americans lie dead on foreign soil. And at Fort Polk, Louisiana, thousands more prepare to join them. The specter of combat hangs over the men of A-Company, Second Platoon, as they enter the final stage of infantry training. They will be sent to the war. But each man deals with this prospect in his own way...

PuppetMaster: Ghosts of Mars

The movie overall is powerfull. John Carpenters once again out done himself with a movie that is exciting, funny and goes from start to finish with no moments of boredom or slipping away to grab another drink, or to kick Lorkanox in the groin.

Set in the year 2025, humans have moved to Mars. They have organized a division of labor and they are mining the planet for natural resources. However, when one mining team digs up a long-buried pod full of aliens, and the bodies of the human workers are instantly inhabited by the strange beings, a war ignites.

MacReady: Suspiria

My favorite Dario Argento movie (and not only because he signed my VHS-covers when i met him). A colorful, thrilling and sometimes gory movie that shows what horror fans want to see. Filmed with special lenses, to cloak the images with various colors, and with a superb soundtrack from "Goblin" no other Argento movie could live up to it till now.

From the moment she arrives in Freiberg, Germany, to attend the prestigious Tans Academy, American ballet-dancer Suzy Banyon (Jessica Harper) senses that something horribly evil lurks within the walls of the age-old institution. Ill at ease as the result of her fellow student's peculiar behavior and increasingly terrified following a series of gruesome and spectacular murders, Suzy slowly begins to unravel the dark history of the academy...

Goon: Seven Samurai

This week I'm suggesting a classic film from the massive filmography of the great Asian director Akira Kurosawa. One of his greatest films of all time, Seven Samurai. It is rather long but Kurosawa has an amazing talent to tell a story and keep you on the edge of your seat. This movie in fact was so popular that it spawned an American take on the film "The Magnificent Seven". In Kurosawas tale a little village is about to be pillaged by raiders and the only thing they have for protection is, you guessed it, Seven Samurai.

Set in 16th Century Japan, Akira Kurosawa's epic SEVEN SAMURAI follows the plight of a defenseless farming village that lives in constant fear of marauding bandits. The farmers know that when their crops are harvested, the thugs will attack, so four men go to town in hopes of employing samurai to fight for them. However, the poor villagers can merely offer payment in the form of shelter and a daily bowl of rice, and initially only Kambei (Takashi Shimura), a brave elder samurai, and his eager young apprentice, Katsushiro (Isao Kimura), take up their cause. Encountering various nomadic warriors on the streets, they slowly put together his team of swordsmen...
