Undead - Movie Review

Posted by: Hakeem
With Undead, the Spierig brothers produce a cutting edge, fresh, zombi-rific film, filled with dark-humor, memorable characters, and twists and turns you never saw coming! There are some original and unique kills, loads splatter shots, and quirky bits of dialogue to leave you chuckling throughout.

In the farming and fishing community of Berkely, Rene, the local Miss Fresh Catch of the Day beauty queen, attempts to break away from her small town roots and start anew in the city. Her escape is thwarted when the town is suddenly bombarded by meteorites carrying the zombie virus. A few people are hit by the flying space rocks, infected by the virus, and spread the disease as zombies tend to do.

Rene finds shelter and support from the town nut-job, Marion, whose large supply of munitions and armageddon ready survival skills come in handy. Together, Rene and Marion become the leaders of a small band that is struggling to find security and meaning in all the chaos around them. And this is just the beginning.

The dialogue is filled with dark-humor, lines delivered with the perfect amount of cheese, and brilliant comedic expressions. Marion has so many acrobatic gun stunts and glorious taglines that this film demands multiple viewings.

Briefly, during the middle of the film, it appears that the story is going along as expected. Seemingly out of no where, a new plotline is thrown in the mix that leads to an eventual full circle and unexpected ending. You won't see this coming right away, so don't ask questions and just wait to see for yourself. Undead is too fun to spoil with giveaways.

The film does run into some low-budget quality problems, but over all is very pleasant to watch. Although the picture begins with over-lit shots so white-burnt-out you need shades to watch, it quickly changes moods once the zombies arrive and enters a Picasso-esque blue period. At times, the sound is not perfect, and there are some small oversights in continuity. The computer generated effects, however, are rather good.

When Undead rolls into your town, grab a few good friends looking for a non-Hollywood flick, add popcorn, and enjoy. A must see for 2005.
