Shinya Tsukamoto’s self-financed, homemade experimental sci-fi/horror debut hit the world with the force of an atomic blast. It brought Japanese cinema back to the attention of the international film community, paving the way for every Japanese director that has emerged since, from Takeshi Kitano to Takashi Miike to Hideo Nakata.

Boasting kinky sex, Expressionist, Svankmayer-esque stop-motion scrap animations, and the brain-pounding industrial score by noiseman Chu Ishikawa, TETSUO is a bold venture into experimental filmmaking, a violent dsytopic vision of a world – not far from our own – where man and machine meld to make monsters.
