Dead Birds Movie Review

Over the weekend I picked up two movies. Toolbox Murders ( Toolbox Murders Review ) and Dead Birds. I rarely write movie reviews but the fact that both got my ass in front of my laptop and writing should tell you what I think of them. Dead Birds is a movie by Alex Turner that has a great motto "There is worse things then dying".

Dead Birds takes place in 1863 during the American Civil War. A group of Confederate soldiers hide out in an abandoned plantation after robbing a bank and find themselves at the mercy of supernatural forces. The movie moves well and is just a great film to watch overall. The basic premise is these bank robbers steal some Army gold and head to hide out in an old plantation.

The plantation they soon discover has some unlikely residents, namely some demons. The plantation owner who had owned the place it seems was using black magic to bring his dead family back to life but soon discovers he did not bring them back at all, rather they are evil demons brought back in the form of his children. The father soon meets his doom at the hands of the local villagers, in a creative way that you will have to watch to appreciate and the horror of the plantation is soon forgotten and lives on in silence. At least until this band of robbers stumbles on the house.

Surrounded by a corn field it consumes all who enter. Voices in the well, creepy images in the dark, its just all good! To say its creep-alicious is an understatement.

As you can probably tell by the picture I drummed up the FX in this movie are damn good. The scene with the sweet little boy under the bed turning into this snarling thing you see above was fantastic. Just made me glad I had a nightlight in my living room, and some napkins to cleanup the floor. Although this movie was definitely not a blockbuster budget it was as good as The Grudge if not better in spots

The acting in this movie was outstanding. The actors for the most part delivered their roles will without any ackward moments. I wasnt overly impressed with some of the scenes that seemed to drag on to long but overall Dead Birds is really a great film. Alex Turner and Sony have delivered a creepy and original horror movie for us fans of horror. Their is just enough gore for you gore hounds to get interested, and a fair whack of intrigue and mystery for those of us who like some depth to our horror.

My only beef with this movie is the story was a bit unclear. Although through visions most of the movie was explained the ending did not really come through clearly. I cant say why since then I would spoil the movie for you, but go watch it and decide for yourself. If you are a horror movie fan then Dead Birds is a must buy. Great flick! And remember, if you go to sleep in a house and wake up to some creepy kid sobbing in the corner just do the right thing... RUN AWAY! :) Amazon has some great deals on this dvd, as they do with all dvds so if you want to pick a copy up check here and be sure and send in your review.
