Olivier Assayas’s Clean stars Maggie Cheung (Best Actress at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival) as a junkie who tries to rebuild her life from the  ruins of a rock ’n roll past – and go clean. Also starring are Nick Nolte, Martha Henry, Don McKellar, Béatrice Dalle, Jeanne Balibar, along  with several music performers – Tricky, Liz Densmore, David Roback (Mazzy Starr) and Emily Haines (Metric) – who play themselves.

The film opens with a shot of Hamilton, Ontario’s smoky steel mills. Nearby in a seedy motel, Lee (played by British musician James Johnston), a former rock star whose career is now being propped up by his manager (McKellar), dies from a heroin overdose. His wife Maggie (Cheung) is charged with possession and sentenced to six months.Upon release, Emily decides to start a new life in Paris, where she once lived. But everything has changed. Her old friends (Dalle and Balibar) have taken new paths since the rock heydays of the ’80s.

The only thing Emily feels attached to is her son, who is growing up with Lee’s parents (Nolte and Henry) on the other side of the world in Vancouver. But if Emily wants to see her son again, she may have to give up her dream of becoming a singer The film – which was written and directed by French vet Olivier Assayas (Demonlover, Irma Vep) – was shot in Hamilton, Paris and London by cinematographer Eric Gautier (The Motorcycle Diaries).
