Spiderman Movie Review by Gabe Toro

Comic books have never been known as a promising source for movie material. Even worse is the track record for movies based on Marvel Comics superheroes. Anybody remember Dolph Lundgren as "The Punisher?" And, of course, there was that atrocious "Captain America" from the early 90’s. Nevertheless, it appears they have finally got it right with Sam Raimi’s "Spider-Man," an odyssey of a film based on Marvel Comics’ most beloved character.

Through voiceover early on, Tobey Maguire, as the titular web-slinger, let us know that this story is indeed, about a girl. The girl in question is the luminous and out-of-reach Mary Jane Watson, played with sexual glee by Kirsten Dunst. Early on, though, Maguire is the dorky Peter Parker, a science dork pushed around by the school. He has lived next to Mary Jane since they were six, and yet she has little to say to him.

One day, though a freak accident, Parker is bitten by a radioactive spider while visiting a science lab. He soon finds himself imbued with the abilities of a spider. This mild mannered teen suddenly can lift four times his weight. Climbing walls is a new luxury, as is a web-like substance that flies from his arms. He is no longer modern man: he is "Spider-Man."
Raimi, a respected director around Hollywood who made his mark with the small, hyperknenetic horror film "Evil Dead," presents Peter’s discoveries with awestruck glee. We are discovering the extent to Peter’s new powers along with him, as he breathlessly jumps from building to building, higher and higher.

Like most youngsters with superpowers, Peter first sees the abilities as an opportunity to make some cash. However, an important lesson causes him to reevaluate himself and realize that, "With great power comes great responsibility."

To tell you more about this glorious film would be pointless, because either you know the story already or you are prepared to be surprised. This film is a kamikaze, and perfectly captures the essence of the comics. The characters are larger than life, exciting and gloriously realized by a top-notch cast (don’t miss JK Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson). Yes, I’ll say what everyone wants to hear… "Spider-Man" is the best comic book movie ever made.
