Versus Movie Review by GoonPosted by: GoonI'll never forget the first time I saw this film. I was looking threw a Previews, which tells you 3 months before stuff is released, they had this movie in it. It was described as a crazy Yakuza, zombie, Matrixesque type movie. Before I had seen this movie I hadn't been exposed to too many Asian films so I was a bit weary. But about 2 weeks later I was at a comic con and a buddy of mine was playin the Japanese edition of the DVD on his laptop. I was really blown away and stood at his table the whole time watching the film. The movie starts out by telling you that the earth has 666 portals and the Forest of Resurection is the 444th portal.. Little asian knowledge for you 4 is a bad omen in Asian culture. So If you are ever watching an asian film and you see a 4 get ready for something bad to happen. Anyway two men are pitted against each other every couple hundred years when they are reincarnated. They must fight over the girl whos blood will give the owner ultimate power with the blessing of the Forest of Ressurection. The hero breaks out of jail and has no memory of who he is or what he is doing there. The girl is kidnapped by the yakuza and they are told to keep both of them alive until the villian gets there. Thats generally how it starts out with other people dropping in after the movie gets going. This film is for anyone.. It has a little bit of everything in it.. Martial Arts, Action, Zombies, Yakuza, comedy and samurais. Since I am a big fan of all those genres this equates to one of my favorite movies of all time. Definetly in my top 5. The gore in this movie is spectacular. Very well done. Not to mention the music. Its sort of a blend of heavy guitar riffs and Japanese traditional music blended together. The zombies in this film are the victims of the Yaskuza who have been dumped in the forest. Now the only thing that I think may deter traditional zombie fans is that these zombies shoot guns. Now I found this reasonable. If you remember Day of the Dead, Bub uses a gun. To me zombies are a shell of who they were when they were alive. These zombies personify dead Yakuza members.. I don't think even in death a Yakuza gangster would forget how to shoot. If you want to pick this up it shouldn't be too hard to find. I know it got U.S. distribution so I highly suggest you run out and get it. There is not one scene in this movie that I found wrong or didn't sit right with me. So overall I would give this movie a 10 out of 10 in my book. Go to the Versus Movie Section to learn more about this film. Review by: Luke aka Goon
