Ehren Kruger talks about The Ring 2

Posted by:
Screenwriter Ehren Kruger who wrote the first film "The Ring" and was also brought on to write the sequel, spoke with IGN Filmforce about "The Ring 2" and what we may expect from the film.  Here's an excerpt of what he had to say:

Is "The Ring Two" a remake of Ringu 2 in any way, or is it totally different?

Kruger: No, it's totally different. There are some thematic similarities. Just by the material's very nature, it's going to deal with a videotape and it's going to deal with this vengeful little girl. It's going to deal with this mother and her son, but story-wise it's an entirely different story than the Japanese sequel. And so that appealed to Hideo as well, that it was a totally different story. He'd be revisiting things he'd done before, but the themes and the way the story plays out is totally different than the structure of Ringu 2.

Where does the story pick up for Naomi Watts' character?

Kruger: It basically picks her up, I don't know that we say exactly, but it's more or less six months after the events of the first film. She's basically trying to put the events of the first movie entirely behind her and pretend they never happened. [She's going to] live in denial.

Which never works in a horror movie.

Kruger: (Laughs) Right. Which never works. It never works in reality either. And so she moves with her son Aiden to this small town on the Oregon coast and gets a job at a tiny newspaper. She's really trying to simplify her life and just focus on being a good mom. Then, as these things happen in horror movies, the tape or Samara's presence seems to find her in this town as if tracking her down for reasons she doesn't immediately understand.

You can read the rest of the interview here.  Overall it's pretty insightful and I can wait to see Hideo Nakata's version of  "The Ring 2" on the big screen.
