Sabah Opens May 13th in Canada!Posted by:Arsinée Khanjian (Genie Award 2003, Ararat) and Shawn Doyle (TV’s The Eleventh Hour, 24, Desperate Housewives) star in Ruba Nadda’s Sabah, the story of a 40-year-old woman who falls in love for the first time. The problem is she’s an Arab Muslim, and he’s not. Unbeknownst to her family, Sabah goes on a whirlwind affair before the secret romance begins to take its toll.
The film – executive produced by Atom Egoyan and Simone Urdl – will screen at the 2005 Rotterdam Film Festival, and as the opening film Toronto writer/director Ruba Nadda, who is of Syrian descent, infuses the film with vibrant traditions from the Arab culture – including belly dancing performed by her sister Fadia Nadda, who plays Sabah’s rebellious niece. The great supporting cast also includes Jeff Seymour (TV’s The Eleventh Hour), Setta Keshishian, Roula Said, Kathryn Winslow Since graduating from New York’s Tisch School of Arts eight years ago, Nadda (Aadan, Laila, Slut) has made 13 shorts, which have been shown in over 450 film festivals. She is also an accomplished fiction writer whose short stories have been published in over 400 journals worldwide. Sabah was shot in downtown Toronto (the couple kisses passionately for the first time at the corner of Front and Jarvis!) by cinematographer Luc Pelletier (Gemini Award 2003, TV’s Hemingway vs. Callaghan), with production design by Jonathan Dueck (Love, Sex and Eating the Bones). It is a TL Boulton Productions production, produced by Tracey Boulton. The film is being released in Canada by Mongrel Media.
