6 Reasons to go see Resident Evil Afterlife

Last week Luke wrote a review of Resident Evil Afterlife that was less then positive which inspired my piece 7 Great Zombie Films Too Watch Instead of Resident Evil Afterlife. I think Lukes review is a well written review which reflects his obvious passion for film and I am by no means bagging on him but I definitely disagree. For me Resident Evil Afterlife was a fun zombie film packed with intense visuals, fantastic 3D and oh yes.... lots and lots of zombies. So in tribute of Resident Evil Afterlife here is 6 Reasons to Go See Resident Evil Afterlife

#6) Alice is back.. Alice is Back... Alice is Back. Whats better then one Alice? How about one master alice and her hundreds of clones? At the end of Resident Evil Extinction she promised that she would be bringing the hurt to The Umbrella Corporation and in Resident Evil Afterlife she does just that. It has a great twist as well so you will definitely enjoy the war between the Alices and Umbrella.

#5) Zombies, Zombies and Oh Yes.. More Zombies. My biggest issue with Resident Evil Apocalypse wasn’t so much the lack of zombies but the fact that they were shot in some kind of insane ‘blur’ effect to compensate I suppose for horrible makeup fx on the zombies. In Resident Evil Extinction they did bring back the zombies but really the focus was less about zombies and more about human survival and Umbrella capturing Alice. Resident Evil Afterlife brings back the zombie madness and even introduces us to some wicked new characters not least of which is the Executioner which was easily the best use of 3D in the entire film.

#4) Claire Redfield is Back... and Brother is Tagging Along. I am a big fan of Ali Larter and having two strong female characters in a film is not very common so it was nice to see Paul WS Anderson give her a key role in Afterlife. New to the Resident Evil film world is the introduction of Chris Redfield played by Wentworth Miller. Although some people have bagged on the casting but for me I think it works. The combination of these three strong characters makes for a great element to the newest Resident Evil Film.

#3) James Cameron’s 3d Technology: There have been alot of 3D movies released over the last year and a half but most have been done in post production and frankly looked horrible. Case and point Clash of the Titans. Resident Evil is the first film to use the same technology as Cameron used for AVATAR and without a doubt it shows. For me 3D is still very much a gimmick and an excuse for lazy filmmaking but Paul WS Anderson uses it perfectly to add depth to Resident Evil Afterlife as well as some serious intensity in the ‘Executioner’ fight scene which was in two words Kick Ass. If you see Resident Evil Afterlife for the 3D you wont be disappointed.

#2)  Paul WS Anderson is Back in the Chair: Perhaps a bit unfair but for me the problems with Resident Evil Apocalypse and Extinction was the fact that Paul did not sit in the captains chair and direct the films but worked as producer instead. I loved the first Resident Evil movie and as noted its one of my favourite zombie flicks and frankly with him directing Resident Evil Afterlife he proves my point. Resident Evil Afterlife is a big step up for the film franchise and although its not as good as the first one its a close second proving the right director makes the difference.

#1) Umbrella Gets a Visually Explosive Beatdown: Definitely the biggest highlight to Resident Evil Afterlife is the heavy emphasis on the visual FX. Admittedly Resident Evil Afterlife doesn’t have the tightest story or the most creative dialogue but combine a good script with good characters and insane over the top visuals, in 3D no less and you get one hell of a movie. The opening 10minutes of Resident Evil Afterlife where Alice takes the fight to Umbrella would put any Michael Bay movie to shame.
