Complete List of 50+ Upcoming Horror Remakes

Posted by: Michael

Horror remakes are definitely the hot new trend in Hollywood and I had no idea just how many remakes were being planned until I sat down and drew up a list of as many as I could find. I stopped at 7 pages and needless to say it seems that just about every movie you can imagine is getting a remake-prequel or reboot into 3D.

Here is a pretty complete list of upcoming horror remakes as of today in alphabetical order. Note: There are a few on this list that are only in the early phases of discussion and in some cases I included franchise reboots as well.

13 Tzameti: Starting the list off 13 Tzameti is more thriller then horror but still worthy of making the list. The film which started filming in New York awhile back will star Mickey Rourke and Jason Statham. The original film is a tale of Russian roulette with gruesome outcomes.

Alien: thats right a remake of ALIEN is coming with Ridley and Tony Scott producing and long time associate Carl Rincsh Directing. More prequel then a remake its worth making this list. Plans are for this project to get off the ground this year. The rumors are it will be a 3 picture deal rebooting the franchise.

Anguish: This is a remake of a Spanish film that shares the same name and is written by Jake Wade Wall who did AMUSEMENT. The original film, directed by Bigas Luna, was a horror-movie-within-a-horror movie. As an audience in a small theatre watches a film about an optometrist on a killing spree, a maniac begins killing the moviegoers.

Art of the Devil: In 2008 Cerenzie-Peters Productions bought the rights to the Art of the Devil films. The remake will reportedly base itself off the second film in the Art of the Devil series about a woman who tortures and murders her students. Sounds vicious.

Attack of the Killer Tomatoes: Kent Nichols is attached to direct the remake with both Kent Nichols and Douglas Sarine writing the script. The original film starred George Clooney and is one of the best b-movies ever made.

Army of Darkness: This one is nothing but alot of talk at this point but every chance that Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell get they talk about doing a remake. At one point Sean William Scott was rumoured to replace Bruce in the remake as ASH. This remake will come but don’t be holding your breath waiting on it.

The Blob: Rob Zombie is attached to direct the second remake of The Blog. "The Blob" already had a remake in 1988 which was writen by Frank Darabont and Chuck Russell, who also directed. Scott Rudin will produce the film for Paramount.

The Birds: The folks at Platinum Dunes are remaking this one. The film will star Naomi Watts and will be directed by Martin Campbell. Much like all of the Platinum Dunes remakes the studio intends to remake the principal but take the film in a slightly unique direction.

Battle Royale: Battle Royale is one of those movies that I don’t know how Hollywood could possibly remake. It was being developed by New Line with Roy Lee set to produce but unfortunately the project was recently shelved. The film focuses on children dropped off on an island who battle each other to the death. So no shocker on why its been shelved while the studio tries to figure out the material.

Child's Play: Childs play started production in February according to HorrorBid.com but they do not reference a source. Brad Dourif has signed on to return but other then that we don’t have any other details. Childs Play is of course about a doll possessed that goes on a killing spree and is a personal favourite of mine.

Children of the Corn: Childs Play has already been remake by SYFY and boy was it horrible. But The Weinsteins are also working on their own remake. Bob Weinstein told Variety; "We felt the 1984 film was a missed opportunity," said Weinstein. "If you read the short story, it's got such a strong feeling to it and there's this religious overtone to it as well. Ehren wants to hit it hard. It's popular in Hollywood to say you re-envisioning a project but a lot of the time they're just carbon copying the original. We are bringing something new to the story."

Creature from the Black Lagoon:  Breck Eisner is directing this remake and rumor has it that Bill Paxton will star. Last July the film reportedly went into the early stages of production Gary Ross the son of the original films screenwriter worked on the script.

Dont Be Afraid of the Dark: Katie Holmes is slated to star in this remake alongside Guy Pearce and Alan Dale. Troy Nixey will be helming from a script written by Matthew Robbins and del Toro. The original 1973 ABC TV movie was about a woman who moved into a new home only discover she had some unwanted guests crawling within the walls. Mike Elizada who did the Oscar nominated effects on Hellboy 2 will be working on the film.

Day of the Triffids: Day of the Triffids is being remade by the BBC and will be set in present day.
Adapted from the 1951 novel and will be written by ER and Law and Order writer Patrick Harbinson.

Eyes of Laura Mars: John Carpenters classic which starred Faye Dunnaway and Tommy Lee Jones is being remade. Chris Fisher who just finished the sequel to Donnie Darko called S.Darko will be helming and writing the project and is looking to get it off the ground this summer.

Escape From New York: Gerard Butler was supposed to star but left the project but the latest rumors from Collider.com have producer Neil Moritz reaching out to him again to see if he will join the project. The script has been put together by Dave Kajganich and rumors have it titled as 'Escape From Earth'.

Evil Dead: Much like Army of Darkness Sam Raimi has said he wants to do it and that it will happen but everytime we turn around this project is on again and off again with alot of names being batted around to replace Bruce Campbell. As if anyone can fill Bruce’s shoes! At the end of the day this remake is not really in the works at this point but worth mentioning since it has come up alot!

The Echo: Yam Larmas is remaking his own film in this case. They started working on the film last November and Yam Larmas says they are taking their time to do the film right.

Faces of Death: Unviersal Studios is remake Faces of Death with JT Petty at the helm. Not sure when this will ever see the light of day since it seems to have stalled. Faces of Death had alot of notoriety because it was billed as ‘all real footage’ when in fact alot of it was fake.

FunHouse: Universal and StrikeForce entertainment are working to remake this film. The last we heard on the film was Eli Roth talking about how Tobe Hoopers film was flawed and that he was the right man to bring the remake to life. The original told the story of a FunHouse that resulted in carnage and death.

Fright Night: The Fright Night remake will star Anton Yelchin, Colin Farrell and Toni Collete. Anton Yelchin is playing teen Charley Brewster and Colin Farrel will star as Jerry Dandridge the vampire next door. Craig Gillespie is slated to direct the film which tells the story of a vampire living next door and a teenagers efforts to warn his town..

Ghost Busters: More sequel then remake this film will bring together the original cast accept for Bill Murray who is still holding out. Columbia Pictures has hired Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky to put together a script. The original Ghost Busters Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson will return and word is it will begin shooting sometime soon!

The Gate : Alex Winter will be at the helm directing the remake of The Gate which will also be done in 3D.  In the original, two teenagers come across a special rock with a beautiful crystalline center in their backyard. The rock enthralls them and they dig up the family's lawn in a search for more of the precious stones. The removal of an old tree in Glen's backyard reveals a large and mysterious hole, a gateway to somewhere dangerous. It's a hidden underground chamber that holds the secret of centuries and the vengeance of eternity. Left alone for three days, brother and sister must contend with the creatures that rise up from "The Gate". No word on a release date or who will star.

Halloween 3D: I know just what you all were hoping for, more Halloween movie reboots. Patrick Lussier who worked on My Bloody Valentine 3D will helm the project. No word on a release date but its a safe bet it will be near Halloween.

The Host: Universal Pictures and Vertigo are remaking this foreign monster movie about a monster that terrorized a city in Asia and a families attempts to survive. They have tapped Fredrik Bond to direct it. Gore Verbinski will produce it. No word on a release date yet.

Hellraiser: The remake of Hellraiser was initially set to hit theatres in 2009 and has gone through two sets of directors including Pascal Laugier who directed MARTYRS. It seems that the script is holding this project up and at this point its not clear who will direct the film.

How To Kill a Child: David Munoz wrote the script and David Alcalde will direct the film for Filmmax International. The only other bit of production news is that according to an IMDB listing Diego Luna is set to star. The film has also reportedly been renamed to The PlayGround.

I Spit on Your Grave: Anchorbay will be releasing this film and the trailer for the project just hit the web. The original film is a depraved and violent tale of revenge. Chad Lindberg, Daniel Franzese, Rodney Eastman, Sarah Butler, Jeff Branson, Saxon Sharbino, Amber Dawn Landrum, and Andrew Howard will star.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers: Twisted picture is set to remake Invasion of the Body Snatchers. We have not seen any updates on this project in awhile but Twisted Pictures are the people behind the highly succesfull SAW franchise

I walked with a Zombie: Twisted Pictures also has the rights to this one. Adam Marcus who directed Jason goes to Hell was last attached to direct. The film focuses on a private tutor who discovers a terrifying family secret while working at the ancient estate of a New Orleans businessman.

Stephen Kings IT: Warner Brothers, Lin Pictures and Vertigo Entertainment are working on the remake which will be directed by Dave Kajganich who remade Pet Semetary and wrote The Invasion and the upcoming Escape From New York remake.

Little Shop of Horrors Remake: Declan Obrien who just completed the direct to DVD CYCLOPS will direct the remake. Pretty safe bet that Woody Allen will not be reprising his role in the classic man eating plant tale.

Let The Right One In: The remake of Let The Right One In called Let Me In is being directed by Matt Reeves who directed Cloverfield. It is a remake of the foreign vampire tale about two young pre-teens one of whom is a vampire that bond. Chloe Moretz who just starred as Hit Girl in the KICK ASS movie will play the young vampire.

The Munsters Remake: The film is being written by Shawn Wayans and Marlon Wayans and will be directed by Keenon Ivory Wayans. No word on when it will be released.

Martyrs: Martyrs is one of the most violent and disturbing movies I have seen in my entire life. It is also one of the most intense and mesmerizing. Loved every minute of it. Dimension picked up the rights to remake the film in 2008. No word on a director or who will star.

Motel Hell: MGM was originally remaking this film and then sold the rights to Twisted Pictures and then to make things more interesting the rights landed back again with MGM. The rumor is that MGM plans to launch a new franchise versus doing a scene by scene remake and they have tapped Automaton Transfusion director Steven C Miller is directing.

Monster Squad: Rob Cohen director of the latest MUMMY movie was tapped to direct but it seems that is not the case anymore. Paramount will intead have Mike Mitchell direct the remake to Fred Dekker's 1987 cult classic about a group of boys who take on the classic monsters to save their town.

Mothers Day: Saw director Darren Lynn Boussman is directing this remake which stars  Rebecca De Mornay as the Mom, Lyriq Bent (Saw 2, 3, 4) and Lisa Marcos (The Listener) Jaime King, Shawn Ashmore, Briana Evigan, Alexa Vega and Matt O'Leary. The original "Mother's Day" revolved around three female friends who, while camping, run afoul of two brothers who engage in murder and rape to impress their deranged mother. The remake was written by Scott Milam

The Monkeys Paw: Todd farmer has been tapped to write the remake which is based on the 1933 original. The Monkeys paw tells the story of an evil paw that grants wishes that have evil unintended results. A woman wishes for her son to return after his death and he does with consequences.

Plan 9 From Outter Space: Darkstone Entertainment is set to remake the film with its founder John Johnson directing  The original film dealt with aliens bringing back the recently deceased in order to take over the planet.

PuppetMaster 3-D: Charles Band is working on bringing Puppetmaster back in 3D. No other details are known but Charles Band is an icon in the indie horror circuit and has launched quite a few stars with his low budget films.

People Under the Stairs: Wes Craven is doing this remake but the interesting part is that their are now rumors that this film will be a sequel rather then a remake. The original tells the story of a girl held captive by her parents and a boy who unwittingly begins to help her. A great b-movie everyone should see!

Pit & The Pendulum: The Remake being done by Regent Here Films Stars Lorielle New, Amy Paffrath, Danielle Demski, Greg Sestero, Jason Stuart, Jason Shane-Scott. The film is being directed by David DeCoteau and written by Simon Savory. In the original some sporty kids go to a mansion to have pain eliminated by hypnosis but instead get killed off by a crazy hypnotherapist. It is based off an Edgar Allan Poe's short story.

Predator: Robert Rodriques is not just remaking predator but is starting his own trilogy. More of a reboot then a remake it will take us to new worlds and introduce us to all new levels of carnage. Adrien Brody is starring and Nimrod Antal is directing.

Piranha: Alexandre Aja is directing this remake which is being released in 3D. The trailer which just hit the web looks quite fun and promising. Josh Stolberg wrote the film and the cast includes Elizabeth Shue, Richard Dryfess who starred in the original and Ving Rhames.

Poltergeist: Last we heard Vadim Perelman was going to helm the remake with Juliet Snowden and Stiles white writing it. MGM is behind the remake so the status of this one is still a bit of a question mark.

Re-animator 3-D: Producers Ray Haboush and Producer Brian Yuzna are hard at work at Re-Animator 3-D. Jeffrey Combs will return in a cameo but will not play the diabolical doctor. Instead Ezra Godden will. Elizabeth Cushbert will also reportedly star.

Rocky Horror Picture Show: This remake which was being put together by MTV has been put on hold which is a pretty good call. How on earth do you remake a movie like Rocky Horror Picture Show? The producer of the original Lou Adler was set to produce the remake for MTV and Sky movies.

Room 205: Sam Raimi's Ghost House Pictures is doing this remake which they renamed to ‘The Dorm’ The story follows a young girl who goes off to college. First she is living it up until some very unnatural things begin happening in her room. Then she goes on a wild goose chase trying to figure out who lived in her room before her.

SAW 3-D: Originally thought to be a remake it looks like that has been scrapped and instead SAW 3-D will be SAW 7 which wrapped production and will be in theatres this October 2010. When a franchise has gone everywhere it can the next logical thing is ‘going to space’ but now it can be in 3D before the killers go to space camp and start killing in outer space.

The Seventh Victim: Originally shot in 1944 the film has no writer or director yet but has been announced. The Seventh Victim is the story of a woman who goes looking for her sister in New York and runs into a Satanic Cult that knows all to well what happened to her.

Scanners: David Goyer wrote the script and SAW director Darren Lynn Bousman is going to be directing. Its been awhile since I have heard any updates on this film the last we heard was that when Darren was working on REPO he was very eager to wrap so he could jump right into working on SCANNERS.

Scream: The original cast and Wes Craven will all return for this reboot of the franchise. Courtney Cox who I have a serious crush on will return as well as Neve Campbell and David Arquette. There will also be some new faces including a few 90210 remake stars.

Shocker: No word on this one other then Wes Craven has announced it. I liked shocker but its definitely one of Wes Cravens weaker projects. Not anywhere near as good as SCREAM but certainly not as horrendous as CURSED was.

Silent Night Deadly Night: Silent Night Deadly Night had alot of controversy when it first came out being billed as ‘to terrifying for theaters’. David Foster Productions is remaking the movie. This is the same production company that remade The Fog which for me was a big let down.

Suspiria: David Gordon Green is directing the remake of Dario Argentos classic slasher tale and Natalie Portman is rumoured to star. I thought their was a recent announcement confirming this but will have to do a bit more homework.

Total Recall: More scifi then a horror film but still a classic tale of scifi-madness. The original starred Arnold Schwarzenager and producer Neil H. Moritz is in negotiations to develop a remake of the '90 sci-fi actioner with Columbia Pictures

The Tenant: Not alot is known about this one but Michael Bay is producing the remake with no cast director or release date info available yet.

The Orphanage: Mark Pellington is going to direct this remake that Guillermo Del Toro will produce. The movie centers on Laura, who purchases her beloved childhood orphanage with dreams of restoring and reopening the long-abandoned facility as a place for disabled children. Once there, she discovers that the new environment awakens her son's imagination, but the ongoing fantasy games he plays with an invisible friend quickly turn into something more disturbing.

They Live: According to the Hollywood Reporter Universal and Strike Entertainment are working on putting together a remake with John Carpenter producing. Stike Entertainments Marc Abraham and Eric Newman will also produce. The original film is about Aliens that take over the earth and starred Roddy Piper from WWF fame. A cheesy b-movie it was a fun romp that I have seen dozens of times.

The Thing: The remake which was written by Ronald D Moore of Battlestar Gallactica fame tells tIt will be based in the Norwegian Camp that we saw in the remake by John Carpenter. This remake however is going to

The Warriors: This one is not clear cut horror but forgive me for including it. Ridley Scott is going to produce the remake which will be directed by Tony Scott. I loved the Assault on Precinct 13 remake and the Warriors for me is the same grain. I hope it kicks ass!
