District 9 Reviews: Its a Mixed Bag

Posted by: Michael

One of the more interesting things I have been doing this week is watching the reaction of you the readers to District 9. To say its a mixed bag would be a pretty big under statement. I for one loved the movie. TheDude, Matt and Rob Keyes who write for the site also loved it. Unfortunately alot of people did not.

As of right now we have 26 reviews on site and despite alot of 9 out of 10 scores its gotten quite a few 1 out of 10s and even a 0 makings its overall approval rating quite flat. The film as a result has a paltry 61% approval rating although earlier in the week it was barely at 50% approval. I have to wonder why.

For me District 9 is the most imaginative, well shot and intriguing sci fi movie I have seen in years. In the same breath its quite slow, the plot has holes and the story and characters at times are not well thought out. So I see both sides of it. Lots to love but also clearly lots to not love.

This is not Transformers and its certainly not Tom Cruises War of the Worlds and I have to wonder if perhaps some people were lead into thinking this would be a popcorn flick and not the film that it was. Its dark, its though provoking its clearly gorey beyond belief and their is no Megan Fox bouncing around in a low cut top... or any other hot chick for that matter.

Its a deep thinking scifi movie that you will love and hopefully forgive its flaws because of its finer points. Regardless it seems that there is a line in the sand on people who like it... and people who hate it. If your not a die hard scifi fan it seems District 9 is clearly not for you. If your into Transformers and other light hearted scifi fare then perhaps you better steer clear. Checkout the reviews and of course submit your own. Have a voice and tell us did you love District 9 ? hate it? was it just ok?
