3 Horror Movie Sequels That Need To HappenPosted by: MichaelI am not a huge sequel fan but every now and then a movie comes along that screams for a sequel. So this editorial is a tribute to Hollywood and the films I think they really should be doing sequels for. Forget all the lame ass remakes... give us some good quality sequels to some quality horror films. So in no particular order here are three horror movies that desperately need a sequel; Deep Rising: I first pickep up deep rising in the $2 discount bin because the vhs cover jumped out at me. I knew nothing about the movie at all but the price was right. I have since watched this movie well over 40 times. It is to the point that the VHS is now coming apart and I am going to need to hunt down a copy on DVD. The film follows a wise cracking ships captain played by Treat Williams who takes a crew of 'mercenaries' aboard a cruise ship. You think they are the villains till they get on the ship and then you realize they are the appetizer. The film is fantastic with a great cast, awesome story and some gruesome carnage. It also is setup for a sequel at the end that begs to be made. Give us a sequel already!
Dawn of the Dead: I am a massive fan of George Romeros early zombie films and think he is the pioneer of the genre. I can not say the same for Land of the Dead and Diary of the Dead but his earlier films were the definition of great filmmaking. That all said though I am not looking for Romero to do a sequel. I am looking for Zach Snyder to get off his ass and do the sequel to the remake. Normally I am dead set against remaking classics but Zach Snyder did it right. He took a great story and added his own twists making it an equal in my books. Its still set in a mall but the carnage is amped up, the zombies are now running and this movie actually scared the crap out of me. The thought of running zombies is a hell of alot scarier to me then slow shambling ones. Zach Snyder brought together a great cast, a great story that paid hommage without ripping off the first one and some great visual FX to make for one of the best new zombie flicks in years. Give us a sequel Zach. He has been talking about it but so far... nothing is happening.
Shaun of the Dead: Last but not least comes Shaun of the Dead. This movie is one of my Top 5 zombie films ever made. Its tongue in cheek humor combined with two of the funniest characters to ever survive the zombie apocalypse makes this film an absolute gem. It shows that zombie films can deliver alot more then just gore and cheap thrills. I love my zombie movies bloody but Shaun of the Dead was the first film to really make me laugh and made me think outside of the box. Where as normally I go into a zombie flick looking to get creeped out Shaun of the Dead showed that we can get more. We can get creeped out and have plent of laughs at the same time. Sadly as much as we need a sequel the filmmakers have made it very clear... they have no plans to do one.
