At Comic Con we had a chance to interview the producers and minds behind Tron. We will be posting that full interview later on tonight or tomorrow but in the meantime I wanted to share a few highlights from it. We asked Oren Avid why it was so important for him to revisit this film and he told us;
Well, it’s actually not been a specific strategy of ours. I sort of look at is is there an idea that excites me? Is there a great story and storyteller we can combine … that would get me passionate about seeing that movie, frankly seeing dailies … It comes down to vision.
When Joe presented his vision of what the world of Tron was going to look like and put together this amazing cast and perfect combination to me in this case of someone like Jeff who is a screen icon for decades and having him connected to this movie was essential. I think it is essential to all of us on the filmmaking side.
It was never a goal of mine to look through the Disney library and say let’s do that, that and that. Coming out of an Alice in Wonderalnd screening that doesn’t sound genuine…. To me it depends on the unique vision. If Joe Kasinski didn’t have the vision he had for this project, we wouldn’t be here talking about it. IT
On how important Comic Con is;
Comic Con is very important for certain movies in my opinion. Tron seems like the perfect marriage of movie and location to debut things. If you guys were here last year, you saw a test piece that we showed and today again in 3-D. That piece of footage we showed unannounced to this convention and it created a firestorm of interest.
We thought it made sense to come back. We plan to come back next year because next year we’ll actually have some real footage from the TRon world which unfortunately we didn’t have. Joe just finished last week shooting the movie. But, we also felt a certain obligation to come here because we kind of got launched last year here.
On how long it took to make this film come to life;
Like so many movies, it could be 10 years or 15 years in development. We had so many different incarnations of this but as steve said, this seemed to be the right time for it and the right story for it and the right vision for it. Any one of those not being at the highest level, we weren’t going to do itl
