Bradly writes in his review;
The problem I have with the Half Blood Prince (As well as the Order of The Phoenix) is that it is so far off from the book and yet if you haven’t read the book the movie will make no sense. If you have read and love the books the movies are good but you can’t love them because of all the changes in the story and the actions of Harry. (I could go on and on about all the changes from the book that make no sense at all, they not only didn’t need to be made but actually change Harry’s character)
If you haven’t read the books the movie will be hard to follow for some and make no sense at all to most, it’s like one long montage with dialog, a summery of a great book shown in fast motion. I know how hard it is to condense ten hours of information and story line into two hours but I for one wish they would have made the Half Blood Prince in two parts like The Deathly Hallows. And Matthew our new film critic in NY writes in a glowing review of the film;
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince mixes equal parts impending doom with a few lighthearted moments, the likes of which have been sorely missed from the past few films. With side plots following Quidditch trials and teen love triangles there are some genuinely comedic moments which have always been high points for actor Rupert Grint, and in this latest film the script keeps him playing his strengths. Whereas in previous films Ron and Hermione were Harry’s perpetual wingmen through all dangers and perils, here the side characters stick to side plots.
They play out their love triangles and Grint makes an admirable display of comic relief, but when it comes down to plot progression it’s all Harry and Dumbledore making plans, Harry and Dumbledore watching old memories, Harry and Dumbledore drinking poison. Certainly there’s nothing wrong with that, Dumbledore becomes a much more important character than he was in previous films, but it rings a bit hollow when, in the final scene, Hermoine tells Harry that the only way he’s going to make it through the next two films is with her and Ron’s help.
