The Day After Tomorrow Review

Posted by:
I went into viewing The Day After Tomorrow a little leery, and I was not disappointed, but it still held its $8 value.

The film was your standard cataclysmic disaster thriller, a favorite of my genres. It starred Dennis Quaid, so you knew from the beginning he was going to perform some heroic deed at all of the convenient times, and further feed into his ego...aside from that...

The plot revolves around a modern day world, where polar icecaps have broken apart and have lost heat...causing them to melt at a rapid pace and produce mass flooding into the oceans. By the time attention is given to the problem, it is too late. The northern hemisphere is engulfed in the devastating effects of hurricanes, tornadoes, and mass flooding, which encompasses most of the film.. We are left to watch mankind…rather only us Americans, deal with the result of our negligence. Feel bad yet?

Let's start with what the movie didn't do right. I had some premeditated notions that I would find myself watching a movie with a lot of unexplained loopholes and convenient themes only to move the story ahead. Ok, let me just put this out there...I understand that a disaster flick demands disaster...but Jesus Christ! Even that retarded kid from South Park would understand that the icecaps are not going to cause global climate change in a matter of DAYS! Toxins, in large amounts, have only been released into our air for a little over a few hundreds years. But for the sake of arguing, I’ll believe it for now. Much like the Dawn remake, several characters demand your attention, thus, their names become forgetful, and you find yourself forgetting who to root for (but not in a Kill Bill ending sequence way). Three Scottish climatologists‘, which the films focuses on a handful of times, fate has been decided up to the audience since the director’s time and energy was demanded in a variety of places. Its sorta like getting quantity over quality. So for the entire movie, you watch these three communicate with the outside world, lament over loved ones, and try to win your heart and attention AND BOOM!!! Their lights go out inside the bunker which they are residing in, and they are utterly forgotten. Then you find yourself watching a librarian become an overnight nurse, where she properly diagnoses a sick girl, in order to lead up to the ship sequence where wolves from a nearby animal protection services have escaped. Sound a little far fetched…yea I thought so. So now, besides the ravenous wolves and the sub-arctic temperatures, you have a father in search of his son.. I really don’t have a problem with this except the fact that Dennis Quaid began an epic quest for his son, on foot mind you, for about a three day span, on virtually no food or rest. You KNEW the fate of the crowd inside the library was sealed as soon as they opposed the son of Dennis Quaid (there are so many damn characters I’ve forgotten his name. They die, he lives, no kidding.

Ok…now that that’s all taken care of, lets move on to the good stuff. The effects of this movie were phenomenal. If you are a special effects buff, I suggest this movie, the effects are worth the outrageous price themselves. Watching a tornado sweep through Downtown Los Angeles with more enthusiasm than a Richard Simmons video was a pleasure to watch. One of my favorite effects was watching a weatherman stand in the path of a billboard heading towards his behind 80+ mph winds. Some excellent social commentary with the mass exodus of Americans from the US of A into the home of the people we love to hate. That right, fellow Yankees, because we’re beginning a new trend of reverse-immigration, so pack your bags and head down to the border. There you will receive your complimentary I Love Mexico shirt. No seriously…watching hundreds of Americans rip open gates and illegally cross over the Rio Grand river into Mexico really says a lot about us, and our disregard for anyone but ourselves and out lack of respect for foreign policy. The Statue of Liberty effect was outstanding, as I anticipated.

It looks like I had a lot more negative criticism towards this movie…but…its only because I forced myself to believe it would be something I unconsciously knew it would not be. I truly believed that this movie had so much potential, but I was just naive. However, like I said earlier, this movies effects and action sequences were worth the ticket price alone, but if your looking for good character development, better structured storylines, and more realistic portrayed reality, you may be let down.
