Exclusive : First Look Zombie Night Movie Review

Posted by: Michael
Zombie Night was sent to me by David Francis at Primal Films for reviewing and my thoughts, and you are all lucky enough to get both. Zombie Night is going down in history as my second favorite indie zombie movie, behind The Stink of Flesh. It had somethings that I thought were better then Stink of Flesh, but overall it just did not have enough to put it to my #1 spot for Indie Zombie Flicks.

So first off for those of you who dont know what this movie is about lets start with the synopsis of the movie. Nuclear warheads with biological payloads detonate in cities all over the world. The war lasts only minutes but in the aftermath of biological nuclear fallout, survivors find their planet changed forever and realize a horror more devastating than war itself... A chemical in the nuclear warheads is turning those within the blast radius into the walking dead.

After a relaxing week by the lake, Mark (John Carson), his wife Amber (Andrea Ramolo) and their daughter Mily (Deanna Wales) are returning to their home in the city. Having no access to radio or television during their vacation, the little family is unaware of the tragedy that has befallen the city they call home. When Mark turns on the car radio and learns of the devastation that awaits them, he knows he must do something to protect his family. Dave (Danny Ticknovich) is also seeking help for his wife and daughter when he encounters Mark and his family at an abandoned store, where they have taken shelter.

While trying to save Dave’s family, they are joined by group of survivors who have managed to evade the effects of the warhead chemical. Amongst these survivors are Keith (Steve Curtis), Shelley (Sandra Segovic) and Derek (Dwayne Moniz) who are also seeking asylum. Ultimately, the zombies, obsessed by their ravenous desire for flesh, sniff out the survivors and attack, taking many victims.

Driven out from their safe haven, the sanity of some within the group begins to erode. In their quest for sanctuary, they encounter many more survivors and the living begins to grow in number. Under Dave’s leadership, the survivors learn how to protect themselves and begin to fight back.

So now you get the overall gist of what the movie is all about its time to get down to the nitty gritty as to how this movie stands up. Lets start with the effects. This is one place where I found that this movie beat out The Stink of Flesh, my #1 indie zombie flick. In fact I think the effects beat out almost any zombie movie I have seen with the acception of the 2004 adaptation of Dawn of the Dead. If you watch this movie for nothing else other then the FX you will love it. The gore is plentiful and well done. Also the packaging of this movie was the best I have seen. That is one place where this movie takes the cake. The intro was well done and the opening scenes and credits were the best moments in this movie. Have a look at the stills below to see what I mean. one is from the dvd credits, very cool flaming intro, and the second is of a zombie that was ACE. It was good enough to make me say in conversation that it beat out any previous works I have seen, with the acception of course of dawn 2004 which I said above.

Now as far as the acting and the story goes, the story was your typical zombie story, and it held up pretty well. It had moments that made me really laugh and go "that is well done" but overall it wasnt very scary and really the acting was a hindrance in some scenes. Although it was not a bad acting job overall, I think some more work could have been done on certain scenes where the acting was a bit to rigid for my liking. One minor draw back. One funny sidenote I always look for the director cameo in these indie movies. I have yet to see one where the director doesnt appear in his own movie, and in this one David Francis is in a tossed in scene of a guy taking a leak on the wall. Didnt really fit the movie, but did make me chuckle since I knew it was him. It was a well done cameo. Not near as bad as Revelation 22:22's cameo where the director throws himself into a scene and pretty much ruins 10minutes of footage for me.

The other big selling point on this indie movie is the cast. Their must be something in the water where this director is, the women in this movie were very girl next door hot. It is I know  a driving force behind why so many people here are getting it, and I dont blame you one bit.

So to recap, the effects in this movie were second to none. Well done and you could not tell that they were done on a shoestring budget. The crew behind the FX need to pat themselves on the back and start shopping around for big hollywood gigs. They have the talent. The packaging on the dvd was very well done, and the intro in this movie is the best intro i have seen for an indie zombie movie hands down. The acting was a bit weak in spots, and their were issues with some of the props and scenes that bothered me, but overall I give this indie zombie flick a 4/5. If you are a zombie fan, you will enjoy this movie so long as you can overlook a few small things. Head to our Zombie Night Movie Section and click on the gallery link for more photos and you will see just why this movie is so highly rated by me. I should warn you though this movie does have some nudity in it. That may be a turn off for some and a turn on for others. It is used with sense, and not just thrown in for the "we are naked hot chicks" factor. Granted they are naked, and are hot :)

I see big things for the crew of Zombie Night so watch for future projects of theirs on MoviesOnline!
