I was reading over at horrormovies.ca and caught a cool update interview from Harold Ramis about Ghostbusters 3! Harold Ramis, for those of you not familiar with Ghostbusters, co-wrote and starred in both of the first two entries in the franchise and will be back for the third entry as well. In fact, Ramis says that all the original cast will be back!
"Everybody said they'd do it", explains Ramis, "They’ll be looking at younger actors [for the lead roles], I’m sure. But we’ll be in it as mentors or advisers."
Very interesting, now back in the 90's Dan Akroyd had a concept for Ghostbusters 3 that never got off the ground. "Ghostbusters go to hell" and planned on casting Chris Farley, Chris Rock and others.
"As soon as Danny said it, I thought that was really funny. But now there’s a new concept," Ramis says. "And it’s interesting, beyond the kind of mythology of it, there’s a personal story that’s pretty grounded."
Whoa whoa whoa - A new cast? A new story? What's going on here? Are we really getting a third installment or is this the makings of a reboot to the series? With these new actors and a new story, it seems more like a reboot with younger ghostbusters than it does a sequel! Either way, Ramis thinks it'll be awhile before this project even starts to pick up any steam.
"They [Gene Stupinksy and Lee Eisenberg] work full-time on The Office, the script process is slow," says Ramis. "Even if there was a great script by the end of the summer, it would be a year before [we could go into production]. It’s a big movie. Lots of prep."
I guess nothing is really set in stone at this point, but lets hope they stay true to the franchise and the fun that went with it! I'm excited to see a third installment of the Ghostbusters franchise, but don't want something terrible with younger actors like the reboot of Knight Rider or anything!
