Top 10 DVD Sales of 2008

Posted by: PuppetMaster

Its time to take a look back at the Top Selling DVD's of 2008 and how they all stack up! Earlier we went over the Top 10 Money Making Movies of 2008 and now we want to review the Top 10 Selling DVDS of 2008. The data below supplied to us by Nielsons is quite close to the numbers in the Top 10 Money Making Movies of 2008. By that I mean many of these films also appeared on that list. That said some did not. Some did far better on DVD then they did in theatres. Here is the top 10 DVD sellers of 2008;

  1. Iron Man
  2. I Am Legend
  3. Alvin and the Chipmunks
  4. Enchanted
  5. National Treasure 2 : Book of Secrets
  6. Wall-E
  7. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
  8. Sex and the City
  9. Bee Movie
  10. American Gangster

As far as this list goes I have seen most of the films on this list. Iron Man which is on top of the list goes without saying it is a top notch film. I am Legend which is second is an equally fun film. Although the CGI that was used got some negative buzz from fans who felt it was 'not the best cgi'.  I am Legend is one of my favorite films of the year but I am a fan of Will Smiths and am also a sucker for apocalyptic films.

Alvin and The Chipmunks is a fun family film which is why it likely sold so well. It was marketed for familys and because it is Alvin and The Chipmunks has a built in audience of familys and fans of the tv show. Enchanted I passed on but did think it looked like it could be a fun family flick.

Wall-E which is number 6 on the list is definitely a must buy for families. It is great for kids of all ages and even us adults can enjoy it. Its funny, witty, the animation is truly fantastic and overall its one of the best films of 2008. Sex and the City I passed on since I am the wrong demographic and Bee Movie to me just did not appeal so it was also on my 'skip it' list. Last we have Indiana Jones 4 at Number 7 and American Gangster at #10. American Gangster was a FANTASTIC crime thriller based on a true story and definitely a buy for people who like films like ScarFace and godfather. The extras where they talk with the man the film is based on is easily one of the best features on the dvd. As for Indiana Jones 4 although it was a fun action movie with over the top action and FX it for me lacked the magic of the originals. Fans of the franchise films may enjoy it but as a whole it was by no means the blockbuster I had hoped it would be.

What do you think of this list? Own any of them? Also keep in mind the data above is for DVDS released before December 7th which is why you do not see Dark Knight on the list which surely sold VERY well.
