The Dark Knight Caused X-Files 2's Failure

In an interesting interview with the Sun Times Frank Spotznik revealed that the recent X-Files movie 'I Want to Believe' failed because of its placement in the box office and not the films merits. He told them quote;

"Our theatrical performance this past summer notwithstanding, I think The X-Files is still a natural for theatrical release. We just opened the wrong week. The week after The Dark Knight, I think, was just not the right week for us.

"I think it was especially brutal to us because we weren't counter-programming. We weren't Mamma Mia! or Step Brothers. We were a little dark scary movie coming in the fumes, in the exhaust, of this mammoth machine that was The Dark Knight. And I don't think we had a chance!"

My own feeling on this is Frank is just as out of touch over why the film failed as he is over what fans wanted. I am a massive X-Files fan and I loved the first film. In the second film I expected to see even more questions answered, and even more intrigue... as well as a followup on the relationship between Mulder and Scully.

Instead what we got was a tale of romance with a little CSI thrown in that delivered none of the mystery and fun of the first film and the tv series. Sure the movie did poorly because it opened up against Dark Knight but at the end of the day it bombed because it was not an X-Files movie and even the most die hard fans found very little to love about it. Did you see it? Sound off in the comments with what you thought.
