Berkley Joins the Cast of S. Darko

Our sister site Horror-Movies.ca has learned that Elizabeth Berkley and Briana Evigan will be joining the cast of the Donnie Darko sequel, S. Darko. This time around the story is set seven years after the first film and follows Donnie Darko's sister, Samantha (Chase), who, in dealing with her broken family, flees town with her best friend (Evigan) when they are plagued by bizarre visions.

Berkley is playing a speed freak-turned-Jesus freak whose sentiments about ridding the world of its exponential sin are rivaled only by her infatuation with her dreamy pastor. Production on the film has already began in Utah.

A lot of fans are up in arms about this sequel and don't feel that it is necessary. I am really right there with them but if they are going to go on with the franchise, they might as well do a sequel rather than remake the first film. My real question however is how much do they really plan to make on this movie?

The original really has a cult following and I don't think that a sequel will be able to appeal to the mainstream without seriously dumbing down the film. I have a strong feeling however that this may go straight to DVD where it will make a fair amount of cash for the studio without investing big bucks into a theatrical release.
