Star Wars Boxed Set Review by NodNShrugPosted by:I've been waiting for this set since I wore out my VHS tapes. Got the box set, not noticing the almost invisible print reading "fullscreen", and it's awesome. They did a great job of restoring all the graphics and adding some cool effects here and there, but if you saw the re-releases in the theater then this will be nothing new. I love these films, but they're not the same movies I grew up watching. Unlike the awesome ALIEN quadrilogy, in which you get to choose the theatrical release or the directors cut, these disks leave you no option, and from what I have read on this site, Lucas doesn't plan on releasing the original versions on dvd because his big fat inflated ego believes that these are the original versions of the film that he envisioned. This is where i have a problem. Although these new versions are great, I'm not completely satisfied with the product and am left wanting more, or less rather. They've turned them to look a little too much like Episodes 1 and 2, and that is a bad thing. I love the enhancements with background graphics, sparks added to explosions, and extra critters running about, but some of it is too much. The Jabba/Han scene is all cgi'd out, and Han steps on Jabba's tail? Very lame scene. Why take away the mystery of Jabba? Watch Return of the Jedi and all the sudden Jabba is a puppet that looks nothing like the cgi version. Then there are scenes of landscapes that are cgi animated, and then the next scene is the grainy 1970's version of the same landscape. WHY? I hate this. Then there are more annoying scenes of Luke whining about something or talking to his boyhood pal before the death star battle... I wish someone would just smack him, or leave these scenes where they belong, in the "deleted scenes" file. Regardless of these momentary annoyances, the films are still freaking incredible and I would tell any die hard fan to go out and buy this set, but only because there is no plan to market a better one.
