And the 2007 Emmy Award Goes To…

So, the 59th Primetime Emmy Awards were Sunday night, and there was no shortage of competition. Television has been thriving as some believe film has fallen into a slump, and the Emmys were full of deserving talent this year as well as popular stars and shows.

At the top of the list of talented winners is Terry O’Quinn for his role as John Locke on “Lost,” Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series, and the nod is well-deserved and well-earned, as Locke is the best, most three-dimensional and consistently interesting character the show has. Not surprisingly, considering Izzie’s powerful Denny plotline and its sympathies, Katherine Heigl took home a statuette for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her role in “Grey’s Anatomy.” Thomas Haden Church won for his role in ABC’s mini series “Broken Trail” as did his co-star Robert Duvall for Lead Actor in a Mini Series, and the film itself took the title for its category, not surprisingly.

HBO’s “The Sopranos” took home Emmys for writing and directing under the Drama categories, and of course, Outstanding Drama Series. “The Daily Show” won for Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Series. America Ferrera took home the title of Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for “Ugly Betty,” and James Spader took it for Lead Actor for “Boston Legal.” While there’s more talent on television than ever, this year seems to have only honored a very small cross-section of them. The awards really didn’t span a lot of shows and focused in mainly on a few rather than the many great programs that are on TV.

Personally, I think O’Quinn was the one who took home the statuette with the most mettle to back it up: He’s the only good thing left about “Lost.” Unfortunately, And naturally, “The Sopranos” had to come in on top because of its grand finale. That more attention wasn’t paid to “Heroes” is surprising, and while I’m also amazed that old favorites weren’t grabbing up Emmys, “24” and “House” weren’t really consistent enough to be real big contenders this year.
